T5 speedometer gear

My speedometer gear inside the transmission is worn, and I was thinking about pulling it apart to replace it. Are there any specail tools needed to perform this. Also, do I need to get any gaskets or special sealant to put it back together? Anyone performed this themselves?

Drive gear or driven gear? The driven gear comes out of the side with just a 10mm wrench. The drive gear involves removing the tailhousing, which then needs to be resealed with RTV.

No special tools needed. Just some sockets, estensions, and maybe an impact wrench as a backup.

Get the car off the ground as high as possible since you need to remove the tranny in order to remove the tailshaft.

I used Ultra-Black RTV for the seal, no gaskets needed. BTW you may want to replace the tranny output shaft seal (about $3 from NAPA)

Hope this helps.

Hey, Pukka, what gears does your tranny have? Does your speedo read correctly? I have the same gears and my speedo is off by 12 MPH. It reads 77 MPH when I'm going 65.

I have the stock B&W T-5. Changed the speedo gears when I upgraded the rear end. Before I switched speedo gears the speedometer read about 10% faster than actual speed

I was wondering what gears you installed. I've got 3.42 gears in the rearend and mine is off by 12 mph. I've got the red drive gear and a white driven gear. Oh, yeah, I've got an 88 T5 in my 82.

I forgot the part numbers for the drive and driven gears, but the drive gear is blue.

Just call a GM parts place and tell them you want the 3:42 gear set. They should be able to order the parts, cost was about $20 for both gears
