Torque converter recommendation

I'm going to be changing out my converter.

1971 Camaro (probably ~3500 lb), TH700R4, 350 ZZ4 modded to ~400 ftlb torque, 3.42 axle ratio,

I'm currently running a LT1 Vette converter (which I think is about 1400 rpm).

What I'm looking for is a car that feels stock during normal driving (I don't want to notice slipping coming off the line). But I'd like a nice performance boost from a higher stall speed. I.e., during normal driving, I dont want the engine to have to wind up to the stall speed before the car starts moving.

I'm thinking of going with a 2000. Is that too low? Is 2500 too high?

Re: Torque converter recommendation

Put an S10 converter in there it gives u about 2300 stall which to me is perfect for a mild sbc street car. I run one and it only ran me like $140

Re: Torque converter recommendation

How stout are S10 converters? They were behind V6s....

Re: Torque converter recommendation

They are the same as a V8 torque converter in strength.

Re: Torque converter recommendation

I just installed a Monster 1800-2000 stall converter. Was about $320 shipped.
Haven't driven it yet...

Re: Torque converter recommendation

So after calling around to a few different torque converter companies, the consensus seems to be 2200 to 2500 rpm for a stall speed on my car.

Again,

350 small block @ ~400-425 ftlb torque
TH700R4
Comp cams 262H roller (212° @ .050)
3.42 axle ratio

They all say that you won't really notice the difference during normal every day driving. Only can tell you have a higher stall speed when you mash the throttle.

Re: Torque converter recommendation

I have a 3000-3500 converter and it drives normally in every day driving.

Re: Torque converter recommendation

I ended up ordering a Hughes 2500 stall w/ lockup. Its rated behind big block, so probably a few hundred rpm lower in small block application.

I'm not looking for every last millisecond shaved off my 0-60, so I figure a little improvement while staying on the conservative side... considering how much of a pain it is to drop a transmission.

Re: Torque converter recommendation

Just to close this thread out... the Hughes 2500 is awesome. I love it. Drives like stock during normal driving (don't even realize you have a higher stall speed during normal driving), but you get the punch of a higher stall speed when you nail the throttle.

Thanx for sharing that info. I want to get that for one of my other cars...
