9 bolt questions

Where do you look to find a new posi and gear set(3.45) for these units?

What brake upgrades (rotors/calipers?) can be made to the 9 bolt rear?

I have traveled this long path. There are not many options here. One option that I have found is via another member of this site. He sells 9-bolt parts at:

http://www.geocities.com/mek88427/nine_bolt.html

I haven't ordered anything from him yet, but I may have to within the next couple of months. Good luck.

Like KeithO said above. All the info is on my page at www.koolmeister.com (or the above link too).

I offer ratios up to 4.10 for the 9 bolt along with new series 3 posi carriers, some used stuff, and some new stuff on the way (hint: mini spools, rear covers (girdle) and a 31 spline option to name a few). All new products will be posted on my page as they become available.

How much stronger is the 9 bolt? Right now I've got a 10 bolt 373 with a weak posi. Also have a 345 9 bolt in my parts car. I've heard pros and cons on both. How much better is the disc brakes on the 9 bolt? i've driven cars with um and didn't see much differance.

My provider screwed things up over the weekend Some still go through and others don't. I did get yours though.

For the time being, anyone that emails me, please also include the following email mek88427@yahoo.com

Thanks and sorry about the screw up.

I am not making any recommendations on the additive in light of recent postings, but I do currently run the additive in my car. All the manuals I have indicate it is needed, but I have not seen any of the TSB's indicating not to. I would like to see that TSB.

Don't know if this is helping or hurting, but here goes:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...&highlight=TSB

Note that the direct quote from my 1988 Camaro owner's manual in the inital post says that additive should not be added under the described conditions (basically the 9-bolt). Also note that the manual says that the additive is not recommended for "Camaro" axles (Aren't Camaro and Firebird axles the same?).

Then, a later reply shows a 1986 TSB that clarified things for the Firebird (again, aren't they the same?). The above tells me that initally, GM did not want the additive there. (The 1988 owner's manual agrees with the 1986 Firebird TSB).

Then, subsequent TSB's seem to contradict previous ones, culminating in the most recent item stating that the additive should not be used. Since the recommended additive part numbers keep changing, I have assumed that GM tried some different things and eventually gave up on additives for some reason.

That is why I called the Chevy parts manager that I know. I'm not sure if he really knows for sure, but that was the best I could do...

I wouldn't recommend/not recommend the additive to anyone, either, Miles. Looks like you could lose either way...

All's I know is:
1) I bought a car in November 2000 with a working 9-bolt posi. 2) In December 2000, the rear end gear oil was changed and the posi additive was included in the oil change
3) By October 2001, my posi was weakening and nearly useless on dry pavement with good tires.
4) There is evidence of confusion at GM regarding whether or not this additive should be included. This tells me that something was breaking/not working properly and they kept trying to adjust.
5) The final conclusion was that the additive should not be in the rear.

Would my posi have died without the additive? Probably. I have tried the rear end gear oil with additive (and my posi is failing). Now I will try without and see what happens.

I'd say you should do yourselves a favor and wait-n-see what happens after I change the gear oil. I suppose there should be only one guinea pig... I'm willing to do it...

Re: 9 bolt questions

Holy old post Batman I know!

But, what is the consensus nowadays? Should you use GM rear axle additive with the Borg Warner 9-bolts or not? What weight of diff oil? Synthetic or not?

Re: 9 bolt questions

I didn't use the additive when I built mine. I did use synthetic oil though. No problems but only a few thousand miles so far.
