poping when clutch is engaged.

hello. The vehicle is a 87 IROC-Z with a 305 tpi and a T5.
when i push in the clutch it makes a very loud popping/ clicking sound. it happens when i push in the clutch after it has been sitting for a while, and when shifting in between every gear. it is loud and i can feel it in the clutch pedal. it feels/ sounds it gets bound up and when it frees up it pops.
i was thinking maybe one of the plastic bushings on the slave cylinder or pedal but they are intact and ok. i was also thinking clutch fork pivot ball or throw out bearing but i can not get to those easily. the clutch feels fine and engages/ disengages fine only the pop and the feeling.
i replaced the engine a couple months ago and didn't have the budget to get a new clutch set. i am willing to put a new clutch in it but i do not want to do that and it not be the problem. if anyone has had the same problem or any input please comment. thank you for you're time

Re: poping when clutch is engaged.

Sounds like the clutch gear bearing retainer (the front transmission piece, that the throwout bearing rides on) has some serious wear.

The piece with 4 bolts sticking out the front of the transmission. Yours is like the top one. It has the front seal and the outer bearing race with its shims in it. You can see on the lower one where it's shiny, where the throwout has been sliding back and forth over it. Yours probably has a step worn in it there.

You are probably correct. If was just weird because it happened after I drove it real hard. I have another trans so I am not too worried about it. Thank you for the reply!

Re: poping when clutch is engaged.

Could be a worn pivot ball issue also.

That piece is cheeeeeep; maybe $30 or so. I sure wouldn't swap a transmission just for that, unless something else was wrong with it too.
