Shifter comb linkage thing

Well I finished it, but I have this last clip like part that looks kind of like a horseshoe. It seems it’s held in place by spring tension, I just want to make sure it’s properly secured before I button up the pan and go bolt in the transmission. It would be a disaster if if it came loose and got stuck in the drums. I really am excited to get the transmission in definitely this weekend. Here is a pic

Unless the clip is damaged/deforemed, the clip is in place when it sits here:

Re: Shifter comb linkage thing

Do you honestly think I could probably omit it. It looks like doesn’t do anything, no offense to our gm cars, but they do like to put unnecessary things sometimes and these cars aren’t perfectly engineered. The shaft is threaded into the case tight with no side to side pistoning movement. I’m guessing it’s some kind of anti rattle clip??

Alright I give up I’m gonna keep the clip. It didn’t fall off in 30years since the car was new. Wish me luck when I put the Trans in tomorrow
