I am very stuck on this one. My shifter cable is attached from the shift level to the transmission, and shifts from park to reverse to neutral... but it does not go back. I can move the shift lever back to any position, but the transmission will not change gears. How can I fix this?

 

Can you have a helper operate the shifter while you look under the car to see what's going at the trans?

 

Yes I have. The shifting lever on the transmission can move both directions fine, but the cable attachment cannot push the lever back to any position. It does not appear to be stuck either as I can pull on the end of the cable and it moves fine.
