I am doing an LS t/56 swap into my 91 RS. I took note that my transmission is off center to the passenger side, probably a good inch or more. This is a problem especially since it will hit the center console if I tried to go through all the gears. What is the correction for this.
not sure exactly which angle you wanted to see. As I looked at it from below, I noticed a couple of things I don’t like. First, it looks like the drive shaft needs to go further into the tail shaft of the tranny. Second, I realize the the transmission is lined up and bolted through the far left hole of the rubber mount. The transmission definitely needs to move over to the drivers side I just don’t know exactly what would cause it to be so far right.
Did you change the k member at all? The car ever been wrecked? I went thru similar situation on my car. I put an aftermarket k member in and then solid motor Mounts. Seemed to bring it back closer to center. I’ll have it put on a frame machine and make sure it’s true over the winter. The k member / motor mounts being off a little will become a lot at the end of the transmission
Assemble the mount to the crossmember correctly FIRST, before trying to hack your way around misassembly.
The one-bolt-up aftermarket arrangement goes in the CENTER of the mount, replicating the original mount's one-stud-down configuration. You have it in one of the 2-bolt-up holes that are for older setups with Powerglide, 350, 400, 4-speeds, etc. IOW, put together wrong.
This is a fairly common issue with T56/Magnum swaps. At the end of the day your shifter may still hit the center console. There is just too much variability in aftermarket parts. Not to mention the shifter is slightly off center by design to account for the torque arm.
Yes correct. I knew the shifter would be off center when doing the swap but mine was so far over I was thinking WTF. But after pushing the tranny over and using the center bolt in the mount (stupid me for not using the center hole), it made the difference I needed for clearance.
If your car was originally an auto, as it appears, the trans tunnel is tighter in that area than a stick one would be, since it wasn't bulged out to accommodate the T-5 shifter setup that was essentially identical to the T-56 except not quite as long front-to-rear. In that case you just kinda have to live with it.
Note that if the clamshells are exchanged like John is talking about, the motor will be rotated toward the pass side (driver's side of the motor will be up higher than it should be and the pass side lower), which would definitely tend to aggravate your problem.
