running a spool on the street

How many of you guys run a full spool on the street? Looking to upgrade to a 9 inch and have a nice Mark Williams center but it is full spooled, or should I get a trac lock style and use that. I want it to be a street car.

A spool is not appropriate for a street car.

Re: running a spool on the street

I just made the change. Its not bad. It does suck on slow tight turns and backing up

they also say its scary in the rain but driving on street radial pros was scary in rain regardless so i dont go out when theres chance of rain.

given the fact that i put down 1000+ whp in a heavy car with a detroit true trac for a few years and never hurt it, most guys should never need a spool. 33-35 spline axle options will handle just about anything

i have a spool cuz of 40 spline race axles and 1600+ whp. No other option

Re: running a spool on the street

I drove a 350hp car with a spool for a while, a well as a K5 Blazer on 33s and a V8 swapped 82 S10.

You don't drive it like a regular vehicle but it's not an amazing change either. Worst trouble I had was a sleepy morning 180 in the rain in the S10. Just a little too much throttle coming out of a tight turn in town and tires sliding when I let off.

I appreciate the input, I will get a detroit locker carrier and go with that.

Re: running a spool on the street

I had a locker in a 12 bolt, wasn't bad with the auto and converter. I put a T56 in the same car and the only time you really felt it is was turning, was noisy and could feel the harshness of it.

Re: running a spool on the street

You are going to want to run a beefy Differential on the street, if you have a Spool...

Otherwise, you are going to see Axle and Bearing failures from trying to make turns on the street.
Not to mention, Tire life is going to be shortened from draging the tires across the street on those turns with the Spool.

Some of the wimpy Diffs will even bust the Ring Gear or Pinion Gear, if that is the weakest link (instead of an Axle).

Re: running a spool on the street

Running a 35 spline spool in a strange 12 bolt, no issues on the street. Drives almost like stock until you try to take a super tight corner, do it.

Re: running a spool on the street

What is your definition of a street car?

I drive mine every Sunday, and race it 3-4 times a year.
I have a 9", with a spool and 35 spline axles, with drag radials.
It's doable, but not ideal.

Re: running a spool on the street

Knew a young guy yrs ago, with a 66 mustang, 9" w/ a spool. I asked him how it was, driving it on the street. At that point, he said "no problem". 3 weeks later, I saw him at a local junk yard, looking for a replacement axle, for the one that he busted. And the one he broke, was a Strange competition axle.
