86 Iroc-Z Burning Plastic smell

Ok so back in April I had my 700r4 rebuilt, car only has 86k original miles but the tranny started pissing fluid out so I had it rebuilt, before the rebuild the car ran and drove fine with no odors or smells, when I got the car back from the tranny shop I began to smell a burning plastic/ rubbery smell while driving the car for about 10-15 mins, some times it would so strong I was afraid of something catching fire, in my quest to discover the smell I changed out the electric fan which did nothing, I assumed maybe a plastic wire loom was touching something or maybe it was just the smell of the new tranny, anyways one day as I was driving the smell mysteriously went away, I parked the car in a parking lot and when I went to start it again it was completely dead, battery was completely dead and so was the alternator, I changed the alternator and put a new battery in but now the smell is back, i have about 350 miles on the rebuild and really don’t know what else to check, I’m afraid to use the car or go anywhere with it because I don’t want to break down but have no clue where to start to fix this problem

What you describe sounds like wiring insulation melting due to a short circuit or defective electrical component. A thorough underhood and under-dash visual inspection might give you clue(s).

If not, obtain a factory wiring diagram for your specific car, and then start troubleshooting as per this vid:

Don't drive the car again until you find and correct the problem. To do otherwise may cause the car to burn to the ground.

Almost sounds like a battery cable touching the exhaust or header down by the starter

Yeah I'd be having a look at the power wires down near the starter area.
