is a 5 speed stong enough
I have a 89 iroc with a 350 tpi and I would like to convert the auto to a 5 speed trans. Would a 5 speed tranny from a 305 tpi or tbi be up to the task or should I have one built stonger to handle the power of my 350 tpi. My engine is basically stock. I know the 350 tpi's didnt come factory with a manual trans but i would like to put one in my car. Thanks to all. You can see my iroc in my sig.

yeah, i was talking about the t5 tranny. i know other people have done this conversion with a 350 tpi and i would like to know what t5 did they use, and did they do anything to it to make it stronger, or did they put it right in and not have any problems. thanks.

My buddy has a T-5 behind his build 355 and it's doing alright. You just can't hammer the **** out of it, no powershifting. If you're nice to it, it'll be nice to you. This doesn't mean you can't light the tires up or get on it, just don't power shift and be nice to it. If you do this it should last a while. It eventually may fail, but it should be good for some time.
BTW: In '88 or '89 (can't remember) they started using "World Class" T-5's with have a higher torque rating then the older ones, so if you can pick up one of those I'd recommend it. These units use ATF as opposed to Gear Oil.
Good luck.

thanks. i have heard of the world class t5 and i thought it was the better tranny. does anybody know if these trannys can be beefed up a little to handle some more HP. not going to be ripping on it all the time. i just want to do the job right the first time and not have it fail on me. i dont want to pull the tranny out twice.
thanks.

it depends on which 5 speed you are talking about. the T-5(world class or not) can not handle a whole lot of power. If the car is a daily driver and you have a heavy foot, you'll be walking home one night when you least expect it. That leaves you two alternate options for a 5 speed, either a richmond 5 speed, or a tremec 5 speed(the 3550 type, not the 'relabeled' tremec t-5). Either can handle more power, but the richmond is not an overdrive trans, so you have to match your rear gears accordingly. Unfortunately, they will cost upwards of 1500 bucks new. The other option is a t-56 which will cost about the same, and can handle about the same power, with 6 forward speeds. You can use the T-5, just use caution, and expect it to break, so you're not too bummed when it does. Hope that helps although thats probably not what you wanted to hear.

thanks guys. i would like to put in a t56 but there is alot more involved in doing that like getting a new cross member, and getting the electronic speedo conversion kit for my cable driven speedo. lets say i put in a t56, would this tranny go good with my rear end, i have a 2.77 borg warner 9 bolt with disc brakes. i have heard i might have to do a gear swap with the t56 as the ratio's might mess with me taking off from a dead stop. does anyone have a problem with taking off from a dead stop after doing this conversion or did anybody have any problems at all with this set up after you did this swap. thanks for the replies.

They also make a T5-Z which is even stronger than the World Class. I have one in my Mustang but because of its Ford-ness it isn't running yet.
