1986 iroc Camaro
Guys I need some advice here please. I’m building a 383 stroker for this Camaro and want to go with a manual transmission. I understand the stock Chevy t5 won’t hold up. I’m not sure if the old borg Warner set up is an option? The 288 first gear seems too high. Ford made the Tremec for the mustang but I guess that won’t bolt up ! T56 is an option but really don’t need 6 speeds. What kind of flywheel do I need here ? It’s a one piece rear oil seal ??? Looks like a $4000.00 conversion!

Re: 1986 iroc Camaro
There are several swap builds on here. I do not have a link to any but check in the how to section. I did a TKO swap awhile ago and it was basically a bolt in swap. Now having said that I had to change the bell housing because a stock one is tilted so the tranny sits cocked with a stock bell.I used a Lakewood Blow shield and I did a upgrade on the link to the rear diff.So now Tremec is selling a TKX transmission so the TKO is no longer available. I used the 600 and everything went smoothly. I even have the stock hydrallic clutch on mine. the blow shield was pricey ($600) and the UMI link kit was not too bad. Flywheel should not be hard to find. The drive shaft is even the correct length . I had to get a different ujoint because of the different size yoke but I got that at Napa in stock.

If a 1pc rear seal 383 is balanced to use a stock flywheel, it keeps more options open. Since a trans. swap can exceed $4000, some folks run their T5 and save up and do a swap later.
Ratios matter a lot in making a car enjoyable, drivable and using engine powerband effectively. The V8 T5 ratios work well in the third gen, but 5th can be a matter of preference and what rear gear your car has.

Re: 1986 iroc Camaro
A t5 will do OK w a 3.23/3.55 and 3.73. That said, theb3.73 t5 and 190hp 305 was a good thing. Those wane ratios w a 400hp 383 and first gear may feel a little short. You can totally drive around w a t5 behind a 383 is your cautious. I have a 450hp 350 w a close ratio t56 and a moser 9 w 4.11s. It's perfect. I used the car a little while w the T5 and w that much hp and the 4.11s it was terrible. The first 2 gears were so short.
let us know what rear you have and your goals. A T56 or TKX will likely work well. They have different ratios available so rear end ratios matter big time.
