Weird Grinding Noise

Mornin y'all,

First, I wanted to say thanks to everyone for your help with the carpet install. I'd rate my satisfaction about a 6/10 and would just leave it to the professionals next time but hey I have the ability to turn a 10 minute project into a 10 day endeavor so don't take my word for it.
Now that my 91 TA GTA is back on the road, I've been having a weird issue. When in neutral or park if I rev up to over 2500 RPMs, as the needle falls between 2500 and 2000 theres this rapid grinding/rattling sound. Driving has been totally normal otherwise, it doesnt do it all the time. Checked tranny fluid and looked under the car while a buddy revved the engine to that range, couldn't see anything obvious. It's coming from the back middle of the car, seems to be around where the rear diff is but I'm not sure how that would be the issue of its not moving. Saw a forum saying it could be the muffler or heat shield rattling? I'll try to post a video tomorrow if I can figure out how. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

That's what the description sounds like.

Sounds like that travel up and down the system. Could be the converter heat shield for example, butt sound like it's coming from someplace else. I think I'd start at the heat shield under the gas tank though. Have your assistant operate the throttle while you get up under the car and listen.

Re: Weird Grinding Noise

What would be the best way to determine what causes it? Getting it on jack stands, having my buddy hit the gas and seeing what the rattle is closest to? Is there a way to tighten the heat shields if it ends up being that, or just remove them?

Of course.

Is there a way to tighten the heat shields if it ends up being that
Maybe. Find it first. Then see what's gone wrong with it. It's all idle useless speculation until it's identified.

or just remove them
Ummmmm... no. Just NO. They're there to keep things that aren't supposed to be hot, from getting hot. Everything and anything from people's feet, to the carpet, to the fuel system.

Sorry, life got in the way. Seems like the sound went away on it's own. I'm not sure what the cause was, sorry!

Just curious......
Dobyou have a thread somewhere?
10 days to install the carpet? I just don't see it.
Im getting ready to do it on my 91 TA Vert. I've had the new carpet "normalizing" for months now...
I see removing front seats, console, radio pod, front kick panels, rocker/door trim, rear seats, rear seat side panels.....remove old carpet, lay in new carpet, carefully trim, reinstall.
Perhaps I'm too optimistic, but I'm thinking 8-10 hours max.
Fill me in, please.

That's probably a bit optimistic if you've never done it before. I'd suggest starting on Sat morning so you have all weekend for it. Even if nothing needs cleaning up, floors are OK, you don't find anything that needs repair, etc. etc., it's ALOT of bolts and screws and such.

Not to mention, every seatbelt bolt took every ounce of my strength to loosen.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't, I'd pay someone to. Some tips I have are to label every screw and bolt you remove. Some look similar but aren't. Next is if I did it again, I'd use some form of spray adhesive to ensure there are no loose spots. Finally, I'd recommend having another person as doing it on my own was a huge pain. You're gonna cut way more than you think but take it slow, look at the old carpet, and follow the contours of the interior if possible.
