Best way to limit axle play in 10 bolt C-clip rear axle?

I have a rebuilt 10 bolt axle with all new bearings, seals, Yukon posi, 3.73 gears. It works very well but I think axle endplay may be causing brake pad knock back, making for excessive brake pedal travel on initial application of the brakes. Second pump is higher and rock solid.

other than running c clip eliminator what are some ways to reduce axle end play?

Just a guess but I doubt the axle play is moving the pads. Factory pistons are a pain to move back even when they're new because of the parking brake setup. Try applying the parking brake before stepping on the pedal to see if it's better.

I cut some new C clips from a piece of 4140 pre-hard plate, put it on a surface grinder, and ground it thicker than the original c clips. I have less than .005” of axial movement on each side, verified with an indicator. This is the only way that I know of to get less side to side movement. Replacement c clips leave a ton of slop in the system.

Depends on the axles. Stock CRAP, sure; esp if wore out. Others, maybe not.

Which is why I named BOTH of those things.

Keep in mind also, that in a clutch-type posi rear, as the clutches wear, the side gears sink deeper into the carrier, away from the cross pin; which increases axle end play as well. In the case of the OP he states he has a "new" posi so I didn't mention that factor. Could well be though, that his side gears are already too deep, in which case, ... you do the math. Yet another good argument in favor of doing away with Stone Age clutch posi systems and changing to worm gears.

I have a pair of Moser axles I'll be using. "Perhaps" they will tighten up an excessive endplay...time will tell.

Aside from the aforementioned custom work by RJ IROC, does anyone make these clips in custom widths?

I don't know of any; butt it wouldn't be too terribly hard to make up something out of shim washers.

Moser axles I'll be using
Not to be an a$$ or anything, butt it's almost impossible to believe that anybody the least bit serious about any kind of "racing", at least in any class or whatever where it would be allowed, would be running TOTAL CRAP stock axles ANYWAY, especially while sitting on a pair of something better. I think I'd suggest getting out there and changing out that CRAP before posting any more about it on the Interwebz.

Come back and check further if the results aren't sufficient.
