Stuck in first

Hi All
I'm looking at an 87. The seller says tranny is stuck in 1st gear (Automatic). My question is there anything I can easily check to see if I can get info of why. I know seller is not going to let me dig which understandable. For me to take a chance at 6k is not something I could do if there is major work and wouldn't want car just sitting. Just looking for opinions.
thank you

Re: Stuck in first

a common cause of no upshift out of first gear(first and reverse work)is broken governor gear(a little plastic gear)or stuck governor-i think this can be fixed under the car in a couple hours.

Re: Stuck in first

Went and looked at car. Besides transmission being stuck, body in good shape no rust. It will need to be painted as it has the GM peeling. Rear bumper needs adjustment. The tpi was swapped to carburetor but from previous owner not recent. So don't have much info on that. Interior good shape with racing seats and aftermarket wheels.I would like to get opinions on what is a good offer for the car.
thanks

Value of the car? Hard to say. Gonna get very wide variety of opinions, especially without pictures. Look on FaceBook Marketplace and watch what they are advertised for vs how much they appear to be selling for, then apply what you learned to determine how much you are willing to pay for this car or keep looking. Market value varies widely around the country/world and also how much you are willing to spend.

Probably way less than the owner is willing to accept and slightly less than what the market is willing to bear, sounds like it's got a pretty bad case of previousowneritus. A solid body and original paint is worth more than the rest of it though if you're handy with a wrench and capable of undoing what someone else has done. When I was shopping last year we saw a lot of very questionable cars go for way too much on BaT. Nothing like what foxstang folks have to go through though.

Re: Stuck in first

I like iit better in pics. First thing I might do is ask my B-in-L how much his IROC paint job ran a few years ago.

Then get a feel for what a bench rebuild on a 700 runs these.days, get pricing on front seat matching upholstery. And 18" IROC wheels. The likely missing emissions and EFI parts, I could address. But for me, that's what it needs.

It's a great color combo. Do you want to buy. it and update <list of things similar to what I mentioned> ? Or spend more and get one with nice paint and maybe fewer bolt-ons needed?

Re: Stuck in first

$4500 is more than fair for that.
