TH700R4 TV Cable adjustment

Hey guys,

I have recently changed the oil in my Transmission TH700R4 and everything works fine. The only thing I noticed is, that the transmissison shifts from 1st gear into 2nd at around 10 mph, which is okay for me, but everywhere else on the internet I have read that it should do this at 15 mph. So that could mean the TV cable is not right adjusted and the trans shifts to early? I checked the adjustment and did a reset, it pulled out the exact way it was before. Nothing changed, the car runs fine and still shifts into 2nd at ~10 mph.
Iam just worried that the TV cable is not set right and the trans burns it clutches. If you tell me, that your car shifts also to 2nd at 10 mph, than this would be okay for me.

It's a V6 LH0 and the adjustment was done by the following steps:

The car is off
1. Press the Button on TV Cable and push back the slider completely in (direction: to firewall) release the button
2. WOT or just push the gas pedal completely down

Now the cable should be adjusted.
This is also the way you would adjust it relating to the Haynes manual.

Could please tell me when the slider is pulled out more to front radiator that would mean more pressure or less pressure?

Thanks!

Re: TH700R4 TV Cable adjustment

Are you sure your speedometer is accurate? Are the tires the original size?...

I'd say the best course of action is to put a pressure gauge on the test port of the transmission. Then compare those values (as per the test procedure) to determine if what you have is ok or maybe not so much.
I've kept a pressure gauge on my freshly built 4L60 and regularly monitor it. This way I know that 1), I've got the correct pressures as per the book and 2) I can note any changes that might be indicative of something having gone sideways.
There's also a more accurate way to adjust the TV cable than the ratchet release method as described above.
This is dependent on having the correct TV cable bracket geometry. If what you have is OEM stock, then you're ok there.
The most critical criteria here is that the cable is fully extended at WOT.
With the TV cable disconnected, crank the throttle to WOT and measure from the bracket to the pin on the throttle shaft that anchors the cable. That's measurement 1.
With the cable still disconnected, draw the cable out to it's maximum extension. Do this with the ratchet in it's current position. That's measurement 2.
It's not super critical where you measure from but rather the measurement is taken from the same spot. I use the the leading edge of TV Cable mount (where the plastic bit inserts in the metal bit)
Measure 1 and 2 should be the same.
Since measurement 1 is fixed (unless you've an adjustable TV cable bracket as I have) then adjust the ratcheting part so number 2 matches number 1.
The important thing is that there is no slack in the cable at WOT and maximum pressure is achieved.
