I have an 89 Camaro Iroc Z with a 700r4 Transmission. The speedometer gear housing that I pulled out of the trans is plastic and a 37 tooth gear. I am having a hell of a time trying to find a replacement housing that will work. Every replacement housing is metal and does not line up as you can see in the attached picture. Can anyone offer any assistance on locating a replacement housing that will work?
The THM700-R4 uses two different Ratio speedometer gear housings.
One housing for 34 to 39 Tooth Gears, and One for 40 to 45 Tooth Gears.
You need the correct Housing to match to the Gear Tooth count that you are using in order to fit properly.
Also the Housing Material (Metal or Plastic) must be the opposite of the Shaft Material (Metal or Plastic) for the Gear.
Meaning, a Plastic Housing must use a Metal Shaft Gear, and a Metal Housing must use a Plastic Shaft Gear.
Lastly... Housings from THM400 Transmissions are not going to work.
Good luck.
Thanks for the reply and info. I've got the correct ratio housing at 37 teeth. My problem is that the new metal housing with the gear is offset too much as you can see in the pic. It goes too deep into the tail housing and bottoms out before it even gets into place to be bolted down. I need to find one that has the same offset as the plastic one.
