How many of you in here have a 700r4 from these guys? Any problems? I am usally on thne Corvette forum and not once have i heared about these guys. But what i have read they have some good custmer service.
I have a 85 vette that is going to get a zz4 and the tranny will not hold up on that motor. The ranny is tired. I am going to be drag racing this car a ton of the summer so it will need to be able to take some abuse. Some feed back would be nice

I would strongly consider doing what I'm an in the process of doing. Forget about the 700r4. I have wrecked 2 of them. Oh sure, others will tell you "we can build you a 700r4 that can take the abuse any engine will put out." Fine. If you want to take a chance and do it that way go ahead. I wish I had made this decision before spending $2000 on my last "super bullet proof" 700r4. I am putting in a th400 with a Gear Vendors overdrive. Plan to spend about $3500-4000 just in parts for this set-up. But I think it will be much stronger than any 700r4. Just my 2 cents worth (and $2000 worth) opinion. I'm sure everybody else will chime in and tell you all the great places you can get a 700r4 built. That's fine. That's another nice thing about America. Freedom of choice on spending you money on car parts, hahahaah. Or else you could consider a 4l80e trans. That'll set you back about $3000. Good Luck. And be prepared for all kinds of responses now, I just got the ball rolling here.

I got my tranny from pro-built and let me say it kicks all the other so called performance trannys a$$ up and down the road in every department. I have had a B&M and a TCI and neither of these compared to the pro-built. As for the custormer service,it can't be beat. Dana is a great guy to deal with and spends a lot of time with each customer to make sure that you are gettting what you want. Pro-builts trannys must be some kind of strong because Dana has some guys that have 10 second passes on his trannys.

One of my 10 second vehicles is a 1985 Corvette 383ci. with 3.33's in the rear & 250 hp shot of nitrous, 10" Continental torque converter with anti-ballooning plates, 3,000 rpm stall running 10.90's at 125-128 mph, as far as I know it is still working ok? If you have any questions please call me at 800 7763288 M-S 10-6 PST and I will do my best to answer your questions about this. Glad to help!?
I tried to get some satisfaction from Art Carr. Their offer was to rebuild my 700r4 for free. But only if I would buy a th400 and torque converter from them. So then I would have to sell the 700r4 to try to offset my purchase of the 400. I wouldn't be comfortable selling anybody a Art Carr tranny that I wouldn't put in my own car. And they wanted $1800 for the th400 w/converter. So, then I would have to put another tranny built by them into my car. And I'm not comfortable that they can build that right either. So, I have a junk 700r4 on my floor. I am told that the reverse pattern manual valve body that is in it would be worth some money. Maybe some day I will pull that out and clean it up and sell it. I'm not in a hurry to do that tho. I have read good things about Pro-Built so maybe you just want to get one of their 700r4's. I'm curious how Pro-Built feels about the strength difference between a th400 and a 700r4. If he thinks that a 700r4 can be built as strong as a th400 that contradicts several other tranny "experts" I have talked to. So, I guess you just need to do as much research as you can and make your own decisions. The folks at tpi performance seem to think the th400 w/gear vendors is stronger. I think it you don't do much to your ZZ4 you won't have any trouble with a good 700r4. But, after awhile you will be tired of the ZZ4 and want more h/p. So, then will your tranny hold up? Good Luck.

The 700R4 will take about 650 horsepower at max when setup properly. The 2004R when setup right will take about 750 horsepower. The TH400 when setup correctly will easily take 900 - 1,000 horsepower & more. Just remember anybody can advertise that their transmission will handle a certain amount of horsepower, look for examples (proof) and more than just one.

The main reason I stayed with the 700r4 is because of the OD . Now I (and thousands more) believe you can have your cake and eat it to. Now lets see a TH400 with gearvendors OD runs you way more than a quality (beefed up) 700r4 . Why not go with a 700r4 if it has been proven it can handle up to (maybe more) 650 HP. You will have some quality beefed up 700r4s and some quality beefed up th400 grenade even though they are "super bullet proof" so why not try the 700r4 . IMO

Actually I was talking (or writing ) to Corvette
but now I am speakng to you. I guess what Pro-built said makes no sense to you?

It makes perfect sense what Pro-Built says. The TH400 is stronger. The last tranny I broke was supposed to be able to handle 600 h/p "no problem." Hahahahaha. Whatever. I don't want to argue about it. I just wish I would have made the decision to go with a th400/gear vendors unit before I bought this last tranny. Another thing to consider is that I use my car for low and high speed autocross, and lapping at the local road coarse. I am not interested in drag racing. I think what I do might be a little harder on a tranny. I'm glad you are happy with the 700r4. I was not and thought others might like another option. Have a good day.

It all depends on what you want. For the price of having a .78 overdrive, that seems to be too much. Why not just swap rear gears instead of spending $2000 on a Gear Vendors unit?
Are you making 900-1000 HP?
Why not look at switching to a T-56? They appear to handle gross amounts of power fairly well. If you really want to stick with an auto, then just go TH400 and lower gears. For street use, it will help kill wheelspin anyway.
