700R4 questions

Hey guys,

Alright my cars running like @$$ and its time to learn a few things about the 700R4. So I have a few questions.

1. Do ALL 700R4's have TCC? I heard i believe that '85 700's didn't have TCC.
2. How physically does TCC work since the TC cant obviously be wired up at all.
3. What happens if you put a nonlock up stall in a 700, or a lock up in one without TCC?

i really just need to learn a few things so i can diagnos this... I installed a 2,400 stall w/lockup, and the engine seems to rev way to high, and the stall never seems to "LOCK" then once i get up to like 4k rpms it starts to shift back and forth, doesn't stay in a gear, kinda like being in OD and driving up a steep hill towing a trailor

Tv cable is adjusted.

thanks

All factory 700's have L/U. It operates by oil being redirected in the tranny. Oil is fed into the converter and it keeps the L/U clutch off (or at least on paper that is what it does). When the solenoid is activated that oil is cut off and redirected so that lube is undisturbed (again, at least on paper) and internal pressures apply the clutch. You might want to try crossing the A and F terminal in your ALDL while driving and see if it stays applied. I suspect that there is an electrical control problem unless the converter clutch is NFG which is possible too.

Well I jumped A & F for lockup...

Lockup works, but when it isnt in lockup it slips like sob, and seems to maybe go in andout of lockup when you're holding a steady throttle position.

now im noticing that when you hold steady throttle and it shifts into 3rd it DROPS into the gear jolting the whole driveline....

suckage all around

That is the downside to increased stall, the engine revs higher and can feel less resonsive if it is more stall than the engine 'wants'. I am not that clear on the 3rd problem you describe. Try it with the brake on just enough to light the lights. If it smooths out then you are feeling either L/U occuring on top of the shift or before it.

Well the weird part is now sometimes it takes off with throttle and goes pretty good, and other times it revs way up to 2XXX and then slowly and guttlessly takes off. Also the rpms going UP and DOWN over and over when you hold the throttle steady is weird too.

This tranny is strong and a great runner, at least it was before it saw this stall.

As of now I wont be able to do any more diagnostics untill the engine runs again
