1/4 mile gearing

Ok, i know everyone has heard this lots before but, i figure this is the place to go to get good answers about my set up...

I have what is in the signature and I was planning on getting
3. 73 gears but a lot of people are telling me that putting that small of gear in is over doing it for my engine...is this true?? so what is a good size for my car??I am thinking 3.4x....and i want a gear that will be good for my mods now and good if I ever put a 350 in my car.. anyway thanks in advance Corey

If you don't plan on changing cams then yes 3:73s is a little overkill. You'll get better performance from 3:42s. I'm sure you 0-60 time will be faster w/3:73s but 3:42s will get you better 1/4. I went with 3:73s and with a cat-back dropped only 1/10. Come to find out the cam in my motor stops making power past 3500 rpms, so the gears are keeping me out of my power band. Now it's time for a cam swap.

Your tire height is more of an issue. With a taller tire the ratio will numerically be lower.

So if I have 16" tires/rims what do you think the best gears would be for my car?

You're tires will be taller than 16" tires. Right now I have 25" tires on the back of mine. Just go out and take a measuring tape from the ground to the top of the tire, that's what I did.

With 245/50/r16's you will have 25.6 inch total tire height.

hope that helps

If you do a little research on this you will find that the 9.5" Vigilante or A.C.T. will give you an increase in performance better than a rear end gear change. I have seen .5 second drops in ET with TC changes, and somewhat less for rear end gear ratio changes. Prove it to yourself as to which way to go before spending the money.

hes right. i dont know what intake you are running, but if you have a stock TPI setup 2.73 or 2.77 is actually the best gear for 1/4 mile et and mph. not so great for the street though. get a good quality 9 inch 2600-2800 stall, then do gears later.

tbi...

get a good converter like vigilante (id recommend 2600-2800). vigilante converters are very streetable so you probably wont even notice it until you smash on the gas. then since you have an auto, go with some 3.42 rear gears after the converter.
