The tranny mount that can't keep a bolt...
For two months now I've been under my car at least once or twice every few weeks, tightening x-member bolts and tranny mount bolts. I seem to have finally got the right size for the x-member bolts but the tranny mount to transmission bolts just won't stay. I have a Turbo 350 tranny which the local dealer said usues a 10mm bolt. I bought some today and whenever I tourque 'em the come right back out! I've tried lock washers and every size I can think of. What's going on? I have the ES polt mount which shoulden't matter becouse the threading is in the tranny. The last bolts I used were M10 - UNC (course thread) Grade 8 (four cost $6!).
I'm concitering taking it to a shop (eegghhh...) and having them try their inventory of bolts and maybe rethreading the holes.
I need help, please!

I had never heard of that before until I looked it up. Are you talking about the tread reapair stuff? Do you how that works and how to use it? Sound good, I'm stuck at home without a car unless I want to risk dumping my tranny on the road !
Thanks for your time,
Matt

Are your threads strip? If so Loctite won't work. Loctite helps to hold the bolt in place helps minimize the chances of a bolt coming loose due to vibrations, sort of like glue. Can be bought at any auto store and comes in different strengths. Just coat the threads and bolt it in.

Yes, I still have threads left, they just won't fit right with any size bolt. The 10mm is the closest. It can't be pulled out then in, but whenever I torque it down it pops right back out. I'll get some first thing tommarow and try it out. Any other suggestions?
Thanks again :hail: ,

if you have a th350 i don't think you have 10mm bolts, try 3/8-16 or 7/16-14 (i think). if the bolt doesn't tighten up you have the wrong size bolt, wrong thread pitch on the correct bolt, or striped threads. if torqued ot tightened correctly and to spec it should not coem out. a lock washer and locktite would help or if you really want to keep it in drill it for safety wire.

I know about threads I'm in tech school for mechanical drafting. As I said eailier the bolts I've been trying are UNC ( C = Course thread). I woulden't think that they would be extra fine or fine thread. I left all my fastener notes at school, do you have any idea of the Thread per inch on the M10, 7/16, and 3/8?
I'm going to the store now to get even more bolts and some loctite.
Thanks,
Matt
EDIT: I just went to the store and got some "titan" which seems the same as loctite. I put it on the bolts (10mm course thread) and I hope they hold. I'm going to let her sit all night and take her out tommarow to see if they're holding up. I'll update you then.

Well, the loctite diden't help. I'm taking it in to the shop tommarow with the tranny jumping up and down with bumps. They're going to drill out the existing holes, tap in new threads, do a little tuning, and weld my craked x-member up a little. Do you have any idea how much this is going to cost? Shop rate is about $90 an hour but my step-dad knows the mechanic.
:hail: Thank you all for your help, I can't even begain to estimate the money you have saved me with the many problems I've had with my Camaro. The good news is that I can't think of many more things to go wrong with my car.
