would backing plates off any other rear end work, or are 9 bolt backing plates a special breed?

Im about 90% sure they are the same, but Im not positive. Ive got a 9-bolt up at the shop, and Ive got some 10 bolt backing plates here, but its too late to go up there and check. I'll find out tomorrow if no one else knows by then.

i modified 9 bolt backing plates to work on a 10 bolt disc rear, it would be alot harder to modify the 10 bolt backing plates to work on a 9 bolt rear. what are you trying to do.

Well I blew my 10 bolt, but I have found a complete 9 bolt for a good price minus an axle and backing plate.A buddy of mine will sell me a pair of axles, a spare posi unit and 3.27 gears for $100(can.).I don't see how I could let this one go,but I can't find a backing plate anywhere. What to do?

I've got 3.45s, so at this moment I need a backing plate more than some 3.27s.

well, as far as I can tell holding them up to each other, they are the exact same. so Id say go ahead and use them. if they wont work, let me know, Ive got two from both rears that Im trying to get rid of.

strange, i just swapped from 9 bolt to 10 bolt, both big disc rears, and the backing plates were completely different.

The bolt pattern is different. I just replaced a 9 bolt with a Dana 44. The 44 has the same hole pattern as the 10 bolt so I ordered a set of 90-92 10 bolt disc backing plates from the local GM dealer for a completely no-mod bolt-on install.

i had 10 bolt backing plates and they wouldnt fit my 9-bolt. Had to hack em all up to fit.

Anyone know a part number for the 9-bolt ones?

well ****, I got completely screwed then. I bought what was supposed to be 89-up 10-bolt rear parts, axles, calipers, everything except the housing and diff. well now that yall say that, I guess the ******* sent me another 9-bolt set. DAMNIT!!!

I have pre '89 backing plates too. I decided to use my dependable ten bolt drum brakes on my nine bolt, rather than the extrmely expensive and touchy pre '89 disk.

I AM not sure what you were looking for..... i have a set of 10 bolt pre 89 disc brake backing plates, and a set of 89 9 bolt/90-92 ten bolt backing plates. As i am sure you know the 9-92 PBR brakes are the same, i just bought them to put my 9 bolt brakes on a 10 bolt, then blew it up AND went back to the 9 bolt SHAGGY
