9 bolt and posi additive
9 bolt and posi additive
Does anybody know weather or not to add limited slip additive to the 9
bolt ausi.
or if gear oil that states "limited slip formulated" is B.S. or not.
I added Penzzoil 80-90 GL-5 and the bottle states it is "formulated for
limited slip units" and it is NOT recommended to add limited slip
additive.
However I know they are referring to the clutch type limited slip units,
and not the CONE type like the 9bolt ausi's. So what is one to do?
thx

Using the additive or a lube that is "posi-ready" in a unit that doesn't need it doesn't hurt a thing. The additive works with the friction disks to keep them from grabbing (same stuff is in Dexron ATF). Having it in there when there aren't any friction disks does not degrade the operation of a posi unit like the 9-bolt or PowerTrax.
According to my research, posi additive is not to be put in the 9-bolts. There are some threads in this forum from December/January where the owners' manuals and subsequent TSB's are quoted. You might want to have a look at these before you decide...
