Stall converter options

Hey all

in a couple weeks im gonna put in a stall converter. I need some imput.

the cam thats in thee now is a no name 262, its got 204&214@.050, has .422&.444 lift.

the cam that is slated to go in there is gonna be a comp cams X/E 268.

the car has 2.73 gears. With stock heads that im going to do some at home porting on.

I was thinking a stall of around 2000, but suggestions would be appreciated. Keep in mind that it is a daily driver.

I am not going to change the gears. I love going 80mph and only 1900RPM or so. Also I get 23 MPG on the highway, and I love that to.

the tranny is a 700r4.

Peace
Joshua

Keep in mind that those gears are going to make it stall higher. Personally I wouldn't cam anything with 2.73's.

You can try it and see how it goes

I would consider puttng gears in it, about as high as a 3.23, but I have no idea on how to do it.
I dont feel like paying someone 1000 dollars to do it.

What's a "stall converter"? Oh, you mean a "higher stall torque converter"...

The easy way out for someone in your situation is to buy a rear end that already has the gears/posi/brakes that you want in it and swap the rear ends. Not everybody can do a gear swap, but anybody can do a rear end swap.

Now, that and what you said about your highway cruising, I'd go with around a 1700 (or close to that) RPM converter. If you're doing a lot of cruising just under the TCs stall speed, you're gonna kill things quickly.

The xe268 doesn't start making any power till 1800 rpm. Better call Comp Cams and get their recomendation on rear gears and converter. I'm running that cam in my tpi, 2100 stall, 373 geared GTA. It works real nice, but if you don't want to go to a lower gear you may have trouble, and your lowend power WILL suffer. Remember well selected parts make your car fast, don't match um up and you'll have a dog.

I think just about everyone knows what is meant by a stall converter.
Let it go.

First, the 204 - 214 degree cam will give excellent low end drivability. Second, the torque converter will do more than a rear end gear ratio change. (do some research on this to verify it for yourself). Third, a 2,500 rpm stall 9.5" A.C.T. or Vigilante can give you a .3 - .6 tenths drop in the quarter mile. You will not see that with a 3.73 gear change only. Fourth, you will retain the lockup for the same good gas mileage. This TC has good torque multiplication, and will not feel slippery like a reworked (hi-stall) stock 12" TC. These TC's come with a one year warranty and a free stall change if needed. If I can be of help, let me know?
