700r4 PROBLEM Attn: probuilt or transfixleo
Hi everyone. I am a new member, but I have owned T/A's since 1978. I currently have a 1991 T/A. 305 tpi with a 700r4 trans, 102000k miles, all else bone stock and in excellent condition. I recently started having a slight problem, I believe, with my trans. Upon acceleration, it shifts up through the gears beautifully as normal. But when I let up off the gas, the RPM'S drop down almost to idle instead of slowing down the car as normal with trans braking. This only happens in gears 1-3. In overdrive, it still trans brakes. I had the filter and fluid changed about 5000k ago. Fluid level is fine and does not smell at all. The TV cable is adjusted properly. I brought it to a trans shop. They took it for a drive with me. Upon returning to the shop, their first and only diagnosis and solution was a total rebuid to cost anywhere from 700-1200 $'s. This supremely pissed me off. I then consulted a retired trans guy friend of mine and he said that he thinks that the problem could be a stuck unloader valve. He recommended to first try some liquid trans fix like Lucas Products. If that didn't help, try to find a shop that would bebuild my valve body which would be a significant savings as opposed to a total rebuild.I tried the trans fix fluid, but no change. I would appreciate if any members could help me with this particular problem. I live in Middlesex county, NJ. If anyone knows of a trans shop in the Edison area that isn't a damn sheister looking to retire on one repair and who would be willing to do a valve body rebuild with a TRANSGO kit please let me know.

disclaimer: i am no tranny expert
anyhow, based on looking at that chart to an uneducated guy like me, i would wonder if something is wrong in the forward sprag. the article talks about the overrun clutch overriding the forward sprag, so maybe putting it into D (as opposed to OD) would be a test to see what happens.
Good luck, hopefully one of thoe tranny experts (transfixleo or probuilt) will respond!
