6,000 RPMs...what the h*%l??
My 700R4 when in OD, under stress (i.e. me going up a hill, like 40* maybe at WOT) will go all the way to 6K RPMs. Is this normal?? It shows no sign of wanting to shift, and I always back off before I go any higher for fear a fragging the tranny.
Also, if I'm doing normal accelaration (1/2 throttle), just before it shifts to 3rd, it will do a rapid RPM increase from 3300 to 3800 without me adjusting the throttle any. I'm talking like in less than a second it shoots up, then shifts.

Sounds to me like your 700R4 is slipping when it shifts. This is a very common thing for a worn 700 to do. Time to get it rebuilt.
Sounds like the 3-4 clutches are toast, if you don't have many miles on this tranny you probably have a junk or misadjusted t.v. cable, for $15 it is something everybody should consider replacing if they have many miles on the car. With that few of miles on the tranny you probably won't need anything but the 3-4 clutches, seals, and bushings. Good luck!

Yep, if the 3-4 clutches are burnt the tranny has to come apart, If the tranny comes apart its better to rebuild the whole thing.
Are you sure its not shifting when it hit 6k? If your in od (general driving 55-60) and the car downshifted to 2nd gear then the rpms would be around 6k.

A "possible" short term fix is to install the Corvette servo, this forces more oil to the 3-4 clutches & slowing down the release of the 2-4 band. This will help eliminate the 2-3 spinup. If this does nothing for you then you are in need of a transmission. If you can not afford one right now, then do not let it spinup like that, otherwise you will lose 3rd & 4th gear eventually.

Also, maitenance is important!!! The tranny in my GTA went out and the people who owned it before me did no maintenace on it. I pulled the dip stick after I bought it and the fluid was burnt. it has 113k and is now having to be replaced because it slips just as yours does.
On the other hand, my camaro that has 178k has had all the necessary tranny pan fluid and filter changes every 20k, and a full tranny fluid and torque converter flush once every couple years. In addition to this, the car has an aftermarket transmission oil cooler. It runs like a champ. So needless to say, if you do start fresh and get a rebuild, do the required scheduled maintence and it will be a couple hundred thousand miles before it goes again. That is my 2 cents.

In my experience with auto trannies, the single best investment that will make that tranny last at least twice as long (if not more) is a simple little $25 transmission cooler :sillylol:

Well it doesn't really do it all the time though, just when it gets hot. Or atleast warm enough to the point where I can feel a little warmth on the center console.
I plan on putting in a Corvette Servo, but does anybody have a recommendation for which Tranny Cooler to use?? A part number and price would be good.....size as well.

The largest cooler possible is the best! B&M makes great coolers and most auto parts stores have them in stock. Look for something 14x12 or bigger, If you cant find a B&M cooler look for somthing that hase large tubes and has a 12+ pass core.

A cooler rated for 12,000 lbs will work well. I have a Derale that cost $35 Canadian and it works great.
Coolers are rated at G.V.W. which is gross vehicle weight meant to coincide with the weight of the total setup, trailer and pickup. That is just the way that they are rated. The smallest one will work fine for a street car, anything very large is just overkill, but it doesn't hurt anything.
