Fourth Gen Drive Shaft ? S
Fourth Gen Drive Shaft ? S
I just bought a supposed AAM heavy duty drive shaft. What I need to know is: What year fourth gens have the balancer ring on the transmission end of the drive shaft? And, will the ones with the balancer ring work on a third gen? Also, are the stock drive shafts made out of cast iron or steel? And I am just trying to make sure that this is not the notorious LT1 "VibeShaft". Also what is the difference between the LS1 and LT1 drive shaft? I will post pictures later of the one I have. Any information will be greatly appriciated.
Thanks,
Matt

See if a magnet will stick. If it doesn't, its a good aluminum one. Al LS1 d/s are slightly bigger in diam then the Al 1LE shafts. Aluminum shafts will not be rusty looking either.

Your 'balancer ring' is actually a vibration dampered yoke that is common to a T-56 tranny... those yokes came on steel OR aluminum 4th gen shafts.
That yoke WILL NOT FIT a T-5 properly as it's too ong.
You can swap your old yoke onto the AL shaft you got and be fine.
