Problem with 700R-4. Please help me out!!!

Today for some reason my tranny is not working. It works in reverse but not drive. It seems like it stays in neutral. But if I put the tranny in 3 gear it's fine. Also there is a whinning or squealing noise when in third shifting from 1st to 2nd and under hard accelleration. It sounds like metal rubbing agaisnt metal it seems like some slipping to. Could it be the torque converter??Please tell me I don't need a rebuild. What can I look at to see what the problem is??
Here's the story if it helps:
I went from a stop light at normal speed. Then got on the pedal and the car wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd. I let of the gas to have it catch and same thing. After this is seem the tranny was in neutral. I pulled over and it just reved. But I tryed it in 3rd and its all fine exept for the squealing noise. Come guys I need help..

Wow, sounds like it's time for a rebuild. I was going to suggest that your shift linkage fell off (driver's side of trans, above the trans fluid pan), but I don't think you'd hear any squealing.

Hey I know how it feels, I'm on my 2nd rebuild trans right now- with a V6!!

The Input Sprag/Hub is gone. The Squeel is the Overrun Clutches slipping under a load they were never meant to handle. TKO!

A top notch rebuild would solve your problem of getting a transmission.
