How hard should it be to snap a new tranny filter into place??

I replaced my tranny filter not too long ago and had a hard time shoving it up into the hole. I finally got it to go in far enough so I could fit the pan back up, but now it makes a whinning sort of buzzing noise while at idle, and it vibrates when in over drive, this is something I never noticed until after I put the new filter in. I noticed that the old filter that was in was fairly easy to remove and install but the replacement one I had bought from AutoZone was just the opposite. I bought another filter from GM today so hopefully after I install this one the problems will go away.

Also what's that small square brown piece of paper that always comes with a new filter?

when you take the old filter out make sure you get the thick o-ring out also.the new filter always comes with a new one .some people forget about it and end up shoving two o-rings into the hole ,which is the bottom of the pump.the filter should always go in tight and fit right up against the valve body, just tap it up into place.

when I took off the old filter there was no o-ring on it. I stuck my finger up inside but couldn't feel one, so I went ahead and put the new one on anyway. I think that may be my problem, the old 0-ring might still be in there. How far does that hole go up inside the tranny? Is there any way of it being sucked up inside the tranny or is there something to block it?

there has to be an old o-ring or else the filter wouldn't have stayed up there. unless the filter was floaten in the pan.the o-ring is pretty thick so usually that doesn't happen.if you still have the pan off just look up into the whole and see if there are any obstructions.something could have happened when you forcing the new filter in.

yep you left the old o ring, not really an o ring, but close enough, in the valve body. good chance it's sucked air when it should of been sucking fluid. usually i tap the new filter in place with a soft hammer

could that be the reason that it makes a whinning sound at idle or in reverse because it's sucking air? Also when I pulled the old filter I did realize that it didn't have that o-ring type seal on it and found it odd that it didn't, I thought that maybe it did come off inside the tranny so I stuck my finger in the hole to try and feel for it but couldn't. Then I looked at the replacement filter I bought and the seal on that was on there pretty good, like it was glued on, so I figured that the old one was made differently or something, guess I figured wrong huh? I didn't stick my face under it to look because oil was dripping everywhere, guess I'll have to this time. Also my tranny vibrates while in overdrive could this be another reason why?

By the way you guys never answered my previous questions as to how far the hole goes up in the tranny and is there any way that the seal could have been sucked up inside to where it can't be retrieved or is there something that would stop it from going too far?

On my 87 the hole goes up pretty far. I found extra seal stuffed up there the last time I changed the filter & it didn't seem to effect anything.
