3.4 swap - a headache
3.4 swap - a headache
Before jumping into the 3.4 swap, I would like to tell all who are interested my story. I bought a 89 RS for $500, the engine was messed up so I decided to swap the engine. I was going to originally rebuild it, but after reading KEDS "3.4 swap boogie" I decided to swap a 3.4 in. I found one for $500 that has 40k mi, seemed like a good deal to me.
Around $250 and some broken tools later, I went to drive it. It smoked but kinda smelled like it was burning off oil. The temp guage was not working and it felt as if it was running much hotter than my other camaro. I put some new gas in it, 93 octane, the good stuff, and went for a drive. The shifting was completely screwed up. It shifted from 2nd to 3rd way to late and it seemed as if i was driving a 1.8l car. I never messed with the tv cable taking it off but decided to adjust it anyways, still not shifting correctly. A mechanic thinks it may be the vacuum hoses, so I will be replacing them shortly. This swap seem to be such a headache. I can put pics up if you like, just ask.

Thats not good to hear. But with any swap like this I would not expect to hop in it the minute I finish and have everything perfect. Ked Himself said he had Vaccum line problems. He says hes still tweaking his project soon to be perfect.
The 1.8L part does not sound good at all though. lol. At least you pointed out this swap is not a walk in the park for all.

ANY TIME YOU DO A SWAP you run into problems.
I had
cooling
ECM
Fuel
Vacuum
Distributor modular
MAF
Transmission
now EGR.
I still haven't swapped in my guage panel. I'm starting that now.
I just got oil filter & oil. I'll be down there. Need to install the guage sensor, I used old light sensor, not knowing nay better, then.
I "finished" my 3.4 swap in Feb of 2001.
It's an old car & parts wear down, too.
Oh well.....
I wish I had you 3.4 @40K for $500. I need one for my 1985 S-10 Blazer, that I'm swapping in a tranny & 3.4 under the 1985 intake stuff.
Onto more problems.
Oh well.
No problems=New car payments to me.
Or the new car I rented to go over 100 miles away from home on long trips.
Ask me about myHonda 1972 Motorcycle, 4the engine now
1968 Camaro & disc brake & engine clean up & sub frame rebuild
1967 Camaro convertible, add complete restoration to that list.
1974 Corvette, needs freshening up, too!
I also just paid $130 to register 3 cars in CA for a year. Love these old car cheap registrations fee.
I once paid $400 for a Brand new motorcycle registration. a 1" piece of paper.
You say you have engine swap problems?
What DIDN'T ya rebuild before you swapped it over?
Once it's swapped onto a low milage engine, it better be in tip top shape. EVERYTHING YOU SWAPPED/REUSED.
EVEN FUEL PUMP & LINES!
IF NOT, you are now experiencing it. I know I did.
I didn't blame anyone else, but my lack of knowledge.
On way home from my engine swap, I broke down, twice. Once along the Pacific Ocean no ONE around, as the sun was setting. Once in a town where they "Don't Speak English".
With my Wife & 1 year old Son tailing me in her 1968 Camaro.
BUT now my Wife & Son drive this car, daily. And the AC will be freshened up shortly. It has become a 92% reliable no problem car.
