U know what i did, i bought the Dyno max super turbo muffler ($43.00) bought the pipe from the muffler to cat from Trak Auto (26.00) and then bought both rear tail pipes from Trak aslo
(together cost me 19.00). So i basically have a Dyno max cat back for around $88.00, not bad VS a Dynomax cat back kit for $153.00 Saved me around a little more than $60.00......hehe, Creativity is the key ! I guess i need to change my signature from hooker to dynomax cat back...

LOL w/Wayne! '86, Were the pipes mandrel bent from Trak Auto? You got a hell of a good deal on the i-pipe, when I did my friend's old '91 Formula's exhaust, the stock i-pipe was almost $100. He wanted a stock (quiet) exhaust, and wasn't into the performance aspect.

I know NAPAs are cheap too, but they are crimped. I'll have to check to see if Super Trak's are Mandrel, cuase if they are, then I'll buy me them.

Anybody know if Either place sells Y-pipes? I dont know if I want to get them, but camaro_hunder_d (or is it "C" now ) is takeing forever and a day cuase my joint from me Catco Cat to my stock cat is leaking like a biatch and I'm loosin lots of permormance...

The Y pipe is(as I have always said) a longs ways off. I need to get a set of these headers on my car to make them, AND when they are ready the Y will be made to work with my headers, not stock.

And yes I had to change my name cause fore some reason my old one no longer will let me in. And to add salt to the wound, my counduit cutter's motor burned up(Literally caught fire) last week. So now I need to get another $70 one.

I don't know about those places, but I went to a "real" auto store nearby, and paid $180 for an AP y-pipe, back in 1997. As a bonus, the thing turned out to be mandrel bent! The guy who owned the car before me must've jumped a hell of a curb; my original y-pipe was crunched about 5 inches before the cat.

Just for you guys wondering, any "big chain" store with their own line of exhaust parts DOESNT use a mandrel bender, its crimped.

I have an extra Y pipe for a V6 if you need one.
I also have a good Catco Converter. I thought that it was clogged b/c of loss of power so I replaced it with a Dynamax one when I put my catback on, only to find out the reason I was feeling a lose in power was b/c the I pipe was almost rusted in two where the hanger is over the axle.

stock piping was 2.25 for me... i got a dynomax catback with catco highflow converter, and i absolutly love it... install it yourself... its not too bad. i had it on for a couple of months, and its never sounded better from day 1. allot of people compliment me on its sound

i am trying to find my tape recorder so i can get sound clips of it... i just moved and it must be in a box somewhere

CC hotrod how much do u want for the Catco, also what is the difference between a mandrel pipe and crimped, does the crimped have the ripples on the bent part? whats the advantages too cause the tailpipes and the pipe from the muffler to the cat that i bought a Trak are crimped

I will email you about the converter.
You are correct on the differences of bends in a pipe. A crimped pipe has the ripples where a mandrel doesn't. A mandrel bend gives the exhaust a free flow.

yep the differences are right, i was able to pick up a flowmaster muffler for 80 bux, then had a new 2.5in I-pipe with 2.5 in Tail pipes and the muffler installed for about 50 bux, helluva deal, especially since my buddy at minekee told me it's about 300 bux worth of work. And it's all done with clamps, not a bad idea, since u can take off what u want when u want, instead of having to have things welded off.

Ok since we are on the subject of exhaust i have a problem too, I purchased a dynmax muffler which is 2.5 in and out (does that mean the tailpipes diameter and the pipe from the muffer to cat are the same size diameter?), and i pruchased the two tail pipes from trak auto which are oem replacements but they are both 2", and the pipe from the muffler to converter also purchased from trak is 2.25" that goes in the muffler and i think 3" that does to the cat. Now how the hell do i make this fit with all different pipe sizes ?
Also i was thinking since i have the 2.5 in and out muffler should i return my tailpipes and ask for tailpipes for a 305 firebird which should be 2.5inch and the pipe i already purchased for the muffler to the cat i can still keep that use that one on the muffler right ?

You do either two things:

1. Bring the dynomax muffler back and get a stock replacement muffler with 2" pipe inlets

2. Bring the pipes back and buy 2.5" ones.

Why bother having a high flow muffler if you're going to choke it with 2 inch pipes? The tailpipes /could/ be 2" each. Two small pipes flow as much as a larger pipe. But, to me, it's like putting 80 pound injectors on a stock 2.8.

Why not go with the full Dynomax kit? Too expensive? You say you "basically have a dynomax cat back for $88"... you actually have a "stock catback with dynomax muffler". No offense meant, of course, but with all the hell you're going to go thru to find the correct pipe adapters for everything, it might be a lot easier to just save up the extra $80...

converter

i have a simple question, what is better? having a straight pipe or haveing a cat co. cat? right now i have no converter on my car, i custom made a straight pipe. and no matter what i do it sounds like i have an exhaust leak somewhere, i tore apart the top of my engine to put manifold gaskets in, and i still heard the leak, i can hear it off of curbs on the passanger side of my car. i ahve no idea whats making the noise. and does anyone know how long a cat back exhaust lasts? i dont know if i need to replace it or not.

It'll last just as long as a factory exhaust; there's no mystery to 'em..

click on "User CP", at the top, then click on "profile", in the table line on the User CP page. Scroll down a bit, and you'll see a text box with your current signature. You can edit it right in the box. Don't forget to scroll all the way to the bottom and click "Submit".

Congrats on the mod, 92Blue! And yeah, as soon as the protective oil burns off, and some carbon builds up on the pipes, the smell will go away and the muffler will sound a bit deeper.

Stuart, get the name right, it's not Track uto, it's Trash Auto, along w/ Schlep Boyz, Speed Unreasonable, Nappy, Auto Clone.

Do it yourself, almost. caint get the stupid I-pipe over the axle. Will just take it to a muffler shop & have them install it & weld the pipes . that means no easy replace ment. Alternative is to tow car to auto hobbyshop & put up w/the "know-it-all" civillians while finding out that the rack I ned to use for the jo has been rented out for eternity

I've typed up (quite a few times) the procedure for getting the y-pipe over the axle EASILY in old messages on this v6 forum.

so i take it your in the military, what branch? Sometimes those people at the hobby shop can be annoying. I had to take mine to the one here on base, so i can get the car where i can stand under it to get enough leverage to get the old O2 Sensor off. :hail: Cost only $12 for three hours of using the bay and lift :hail: (I also took the oportunity to rotate the tires.) I ended up haveing to have on of the "Know-it-all" civiallians you speak of to torch it off ( wouldn't let me use the "REAL" Torch ) FYI - im a depentant though.

TomP, kinda tired posting 3am, couldn't even manage to spell all words right, let alone use the search. Stuart check my profile. I think it's a liability thing w/the welding, as even those here that are certified welders caint do it in the hobyshop.

Got the i-pipe finally. It's the dynomax 2.5 pipe and looks like it even has a mount attached where the hanger would have been so I guess I don't need to try finding the 2.5 hanger. Now just need to put it all on. I can't wait to finally get this done and see if I have a little extra power and better sound. Just hope I'll pass inspection again next year since I won't have the factory cat. Better hold on to it just in case. Only been 2 weeks since weldjob and car is already louder again and loosing power. Can't tell from where though.

And I better figure out what KN air filter to get and start on the intake. And clean it out.

Then the timing chain.

and the egr valve, hose, etc.

and the pcv valve.

fuel injectors

exhaust manifold leak(maybe)

wheel bearings.

allignment

adjust TV cable.

and on and on and on

Haha, it never stops, right? My girlfriend was trying to get me to buy a new car yesterday; telling me that she hates to see me put all this work into an old car. She can't quite understand that I love doing it! (Plus, it's really my fault; I haven't done anything major to the car in the past 2 or 3 years. I could've done the engine last summer, or the trans, or something...! Now I'm going to try to cram it all in this summer; hopefully I get something done!)
