Ignition Helll

I keep melting my #3 sprakplug wire ive gone though at least 10 sets of wires MSD and every other ones im tryin the accell 8.8 wires now. Would it be bad to remove the heat shield by my EGR thats were they keep melting and then sparking off of. I even got 1 new wire did the same thing sparked off the heat shield. Ive gotten the boots that go over the wires and they still arch off. So basicly can i drivwe with out the heat shield and second how bad is it to drive on 5 cylynders? Ill have the wire set tuesday

Just get a heat shield for the boot and put some wire conduit on the plug wire. I have neither and my wire doesn't melt.

Oh, and DON'T drive it on 5 cylinders. With an ignition miss, you'll destroy the cat if you drive it long enough.

Seems like it would be worse if you did not have the heatshield to shield that heat , thats why its called a heatshield ! I don't mean to be a smarta$$ , Ok I can be a smarta$$ lol ....No pun intended . But seriously dood , do you have wires separators ? I have my wires cut ( I made them myself ) to where I have them "hanging in the air " above the valve covers with wire separators , then I have some Taylor heat shield boots on just the wire boot on them . I dont know how much longer they will last , there kinda showing wear already after 4 months , but its better than changing the boots every month .If these wear out , I will buy some kinda heat wrap from Summit and wrap it . I only have the problem of burning my boots , my wires never burn on that side .When you put your wires on , are the boots snapping on the plugs into place ?, b/c Im thinking maybe if you arent, they arc out on that side easier than the others would b/c of all that heat .

They wont work . I promice you they wont , they only way they wont burn will be wrapping some sort of heat shrink sleeve on them , or heat sleeve boot protectors .Thats the only way you can expect to go without frying wires , TRUST ME , I've been through this .

Cheaper than buying all those plugwires , Seriously , it really will be . You'll be :hail: me after you do all this and it works ...

Here's what you do , Your plugwires are crapped out now b/c of the boots right ? Go down to Advance Auto Parts , Autozone , etc . Tell them your looking for some good plugboots , tell them you just need the boots . Try to buy JUST however many you need . Put that on the wire(s) that are burned . Look in the Summit cataloque at what they have in the Ignition accessories . Look for heat shrink tape (you'll know it when you see it ) ..Or just e-mail Summit's tech line . Im telling you , this will sure beat the hell out of buing all those plugwires !!! And save some of your money ! B/c I have burned boots like you in the past and I cant imagine buying plugs that often ! ouch !

I took that EGR heat shield off a long time ago; no problems with my #3 wire. How are you guys routing these wires?? Re route the one wire so it's nowhere near the EGR pipe. Use wire-ties if you have to. How many of you are still running all the plug wires around the back corner of the motor (factory routing)? That's a hell of a squeeze. All my wires come "up" over the valve covers.

my biggest problem was routing the wires right at the dist cap. Got kinda tight there. I've got like 20 of the msd 2wire connectors all over the place in there. The only thing my wires touch are the connectors or other plastic (no metal) parts.

Tom,

I route my #3 wire a way from the EGR, but still the combined heat from the EGR and manifold melt the crap out of that wire. The heat shield never made any diference for me. After all it does take heat from the EGR and puts it that much closer to the plug wire. Thats how a heat shiled / heat sink works. I burn that wire about every 4 months, but then again the car makes an 170 mile round trip Monday - Friday + weekend driving. So it doesn't surprise me that much that I go through wires faster then any one else.
