my coil is leakin once more???

This coil is not a month old and it is leaking. I re did part of my ram air system, went for a drive and it started goig nuts again. came home, lifted the hood, and sure enough again with the blue light leaking from the sides of the coil.

how or what could cause coils to go bad like that???

what the hell, real glad i did not run out n buy another accell coil.

why are my coils leaking???

For the LIFE OF ME, I can't figure out what you guys are doing to these parts
I have my Accel coil, upside down.
Works perfect.
I have it mounted "different" works perfect
I have another Accel coil, remote mount version of over 10 years usage & over 100,000 miles.
Then used that 100K+ mile coil on my 1985 Firebird for about a year.
That one still works perfect.
It will go back on my S-10 Blazer with the 3.4 swap.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO THEM??
Honest contact the manufacture, get new ones for free....
Why do you put them back in the same place.
Make it easy, move it else where.
Lots of room in there.

HEAT, HEAT, HEAT I moved mine all the WAY over by the shock tower, next to the A/C dryer, so far so good, I got a long lead from O'Reily to reach to the cap and I got a bracket made to fit the MSD blaster stock replacement coil and drilled some holes in the fender and mounted it. KED85, you ever look at yours in the DARK???

YES I ATE coils like candy, they would last about a month then they would get weak. I even sent one back to MSD and the didn't even fuss, they KNOW guys, they KNOW!!

I've been busy with my Wife:hail: :hail:

Honest.
After I first saw this topic, I went outside.
Started car & checked.
NOPE
Again, what are you guys doing.
Are you NOT MOUNTING THESE ITEMS SO THEY CAN ABSORB VIBRATION?
ONLY WAY YOU GUYS CAN BE HURTING THEM, is by a poor installation job.
Something you're doing, weakens the casing.
On my coils, I always use rubber washers between base & object mounted on.
Rubber washers at Plumbing section are PERFECT!
When I had total ignition failure on my Firebird, I used that 100,000 mile PLUS Accel Coil I had mounted in my S-10 Blazer for 10 years. Think I was kind to that truck?
Firebird started right up, after hooking in that Accel 140008 coil.
THEN I had no coil in my Blazer.
What did I use?
The 211,000 mile original 1985 GM Chevy coil, mounted in the bracketry, above the exhaust manifold, it's whole life.
Hooked up that coil, my S-10 Blazer, started right up, too.

Again, I don't know what you guys are doing.
BUT call the manufacture, demand new coil from them, for defective.
BUT BE NICE, it works, PROMISE

My current Accel 140011 coil is remote mounted, hanging UPSIDE DOWN on aluminum "L" bracket (thick, easy to bend, absorbs vibration, keeps shape), off of rain gutter overhang, firewall area, passenger side.
I had to drill 4 holes in the rain gutter over hang part, 4 holes in bracket for holding coil. I use stainless steel wire to hold coil wire to distributor away from any other wires.
High voltage, ya know

Another good reason to buy a coil that doesn't go in the factory location! Aw, okay, I've talked myself into it, I'll get a pic up of my Blaster SS location.

Okay, here's three views of the coil, from the front of the car, from the passenger fender, and from the top. As you know, I've pulled all my a/c system except for the evaporator. I made the bracket from 1/8" steel. One piece is 2" wide; the coil sits on that. The other piece is 1/2" wide, and is bolted perpendicular to the 2" strip, where the 2" strip enters the edge of the heater/evaporator box. This keeps the mount from sliding out of the heater/evaporator box.

Note the distance from the exhaust manifold & heater hoses. You might also grab a guess on how my plug wires are routed, and why I've never had the #3 plug wire burn on the EGR riser tube.

Oops, forgot the "top view" pic!

TOM

is that blaster ss coil just taped into the stock wiring or do you have a MSD box hidden some where???

IT was vibrations, It was only on with 1 screw. 2 were lose and 1 was gone.

I put them on by hand and guess I never torqued them, oops.

I realize it should be in a much cooler area but most race site , the first tip is to either move your coil closer to the cap and/or shorten the wire as much as you can.

I am using my alt. mount location I had for my second coil idea, never wired it up but I just drilled some holes into the what you call it,cowl arear near the hood gasket seal. up high and mounted better. easier to get at but still only as far away as the stock wire will permit.

how often do you change your plug wires guys???

has not been 12hrs since i got another coil. car runs right but i can see the new one leaking already. a blue glow around the sides.

My wires are not that old, could bad wires do that, force the coil to find an easier way to ground???

If it was plugs it would run rough???

I am really about upto here with it.

I am about ready to park it and drive my wagon for a while.

1980 Buick Electra Estate wagon, seats 9.
Buick 350X/Turbo 400
hand built, tuned and modfied 4barrel Q-junk, 2 1/2 in spacer. accell coil and plugs. 8.8 kems.
cold air mod.

Is the clip going on all the way ? Going over that little bump and clicking ? If not ghetto rig it with a rubberband . I had to do mine . I think thats why I was eating coils b/c I had a clip that broke and it was causing it to be lose and arc out . Now that I have a new clip it wont click on so I had to ghetto rig it with a rubber band . I just put the rubberband around the two clips that go on there so it bent the clip towards that little bump some more so it would snap on click on there . I hope you understand all this im telling you lol . Its late , Im tired and haveing trouble explaining it !

i had kinda a similar problem a few weeks ago my coil was sparkng off the sides and all my wires were arching.
Got new wires didnt help went to my frineds shop turned out to be a bad spark plug. Dose it feel like its missing at all and do you hear like a loud tapping noise kind of like a really loud injector or a lifter?

I've got an MSD 6AL box where the coolant reservoir was. I used the MSD remote HEI adapter so I didn't have to cut any wires, and I can "go back" to my stock coil if I ever get stuck on the highway, and think that the MSD isn't working.

There sure is! And I've posted it a few times already, but everyone wants to spend more $$ and buy the direct-fit coils. Hey, to each their own! (I think a remote coil looks cool as hell.) Search this forum for "blaster factory" written by "TomP" and I'm sure you'll find a message or five by me.

If you don't want to cut & splice, you can buy the MSD direct plug in harness for connecting a 6AL ignition to a GM remote HEI. I think I paid $15 for it from Summit. And like I said, it allows me to plug my old stock coil (which is still on the car as a backup) for diagnostic purposes.

Geez, looking back at my pics, my engine compartment doesn't look that dirty!! I guess the camera lies! Haha, maybe I'll clean it up and take a picture or two of it.

ok cool.

so lets recap tom and jot this down.

its not the fuel pump, relay, tps,EGR or the coil.

its plugs and wires when a car go nuts.

I have my accell coil back on, works fine. plugs n wires. plugs n wires.

You know this has happened to me before in my past.

Guy I worked with was selling his 1980 camaro. He only wanted 250 bucks for it to buy a new exhust for some VW rice machine before the rice term was even used.

Only real damage was to the roof and right behind the drivers door. They guys mom I beleive drove it under a semi truck. While moving on the eway. they and the car survived quiet well.

I ran into the similar thing, car ran nuts, replaced everything in GM HEI ened up just grabing some 89cent champion plugs from andersons and it ran.

same things, newer plugs, color is fine but I sure can eat them up. Least in a bike or gocart, they work unless they are carbo fouled or oily.

Go Gm Ignitions, needs MSD 4 more spark.

so odd it happens again almost the same thing but this time I got all this computer crap, codes that dont mean ****,sensors everywhere and its nuts.

It was a 305, i did it all, not as exciting. I like a v6 stick better.
Course I do miss power brakes, till its like a strange spooky fog.
