Started body work on my car!

Ok I started the body work on my car. First I hit the stress crack on my pass. side and some chips. then I takled the huge gouge in the rear quarter panel behind the door it is just above the rubber protector on ther side. My question is will the bondo stay in place if it is over 1/4 of a inch thick. The gash is about 1/4 deep in the deepest part and maybee 1/8 wide. but the top of the metal is pulled inward a little bit. If you dont get it I will get picks next week. After body work and primer I will take on the exhast then look for a 3.4 wish me luck

I wouldn't use that thick of bondo; it wasn't meant to fill in a gap that large. Even lead wasn't meant to fill in large gaps like that! (Lead had the same bad reputation as Bondo has now; only difference? Not many people use lead anymore, so you don't hear about it as much.) Can you get to the body panel behind it, for some hammer & dolly work, to make the dent less thick?

How did you patch the stress cracks?

If you have the time and a little extra money replace all the rust holes and cracks with metal. My car was done all bondo and it bubbled back through really quick. If you spend a little time and money you will be more pleased then watching hundreds go down the drain in a matter of a few months.

If you choose to not use metal fibre glass it so atleast there is some structural integrety.

Ok Tomp sand buy the stress cracks. Under the paint I hit bondo, so I kept sanding. Then hit metal and saw that their was two piecies of the roof that gm welded togeter to make up the roof. Go to the very corner of the door opening and head up, and to the left you will find the joints of the outside sheetmetal. The one traveling up is the roof one, and the one travling toward the back of the car is the quater panel. I sanded till I hit the bondo theat covered the small gap. over the years the metal gets weaker and flexes and then the bondo cracks making a stress crack. The joints are always there it that the welds get weaker and the metal gives a little. So remove the bondo and start over with new bondo. then place subframe conecters. Will it fix it for ever. no it will crack again but it is worth I try. Maybe the subframe conectors will help it out.

Ack! You didn't hit Bondo, you hit lead!!! It was grayish, right? That's lead. GM fills that area with lead because it's a body seam. And trust me, bondo will not fix the crack. Do yourself a favor, and pay a body shop a couple bux to weld 'em shut. How do I know? I've "been there and done that". Want to see what'll happen to that little tiny crack of yours?

(See, I do "get it"... I had a feeling you filled with Bondo!)

Okay, no problem, and thanks!

Looks like it's coming along good; is that the car's clearcoat that's peeling, or actual paint?
