ticking or clicking sounds can be caused by a lot. Does it get louder or faster when you rev the motor? The most common cause of a ticking sound is something in the valve train or an exhaust leak.

I'm sure you have a stethescope lying around your garage... if not, you can buy one. It's just a length of heater hose. I think they charge $0.50 a foot? HOld one end next to your ear, and work the other one around the engine, making careful not to catch you, your clothing/jewelry, or the hose in the engine's fanbelts.

I would try Tom's suggestion of a ghettoscope to try and see if it is coming from within the engine. Also feel around your manifolds while the motor is running for hot air coming from an exhaust leak...be careful not to touch anything hot, of course. Make sure all vacuum lines are secure and intact. Also check under the car at the AIR breather tube for the cat, they have been broken on a lot fo cars I've seen and create an exhaust leak.
