CHC Header and Y pipe info

For you guys who are worried about a ypipe fitting Camaro Hunters headers, I did a little telephone calling today. It turns out that Meinke, the certain ones that have the correct equipment, will either bend your Ypipe or build you a custom one. And get this: To have a brand new one made to fit, mandrel bent with no ridges, would be worst case scenario $250. Usually, he said, it was closer to 150 plus or minus.

So this means, get the headers for 150 plus shipping, 150 for a y pipe, some straight pipe, and muffler of my choice (glass pack, $20, or maybe a dynomax straight thru racing muff) a complete exhaust can be made and put on for $400 or less.

So call up some local muffler shops. They love the business. And the ones around here have pretty good prices.

Finny the local Minike in C'Dale charged me $25 for the pipes he made.... Granted he did not make them the way I wanted, so they did not fit right but still....

CHC ?????

ok i just tried several local shops and there all nut's they all want me to bring in all the parts so they can do the complete install of the dynomax cat back, catco hi-flow cc, and your headers
then at that point were already at around $300 + or so depending on how much trouble they have putting it all on.......
then at this point then they will look to see what kind of y-pipe i need if any

i've been to five local shops and they've pretty much all have said the same thing so i'm gonna get screwed on this cash wise but what the heck

you sure we can't talk you into putting together a pipe to go with you headers

heck the last three shop's started talking about all these other parts and pices that i need to get in order to install and run your set up.......

All kidding aside guy's i'm still very new to this so bare with me.....

what else if anything do i or will i need to get the most out of my ride (fully stock 91 w/3.1L ) ??????

with that said thanks again

I decided what I'm gonna do...let me know what you guys think.

CHC headers
custom y pipe, which goes to the center of the car instead of the pass. side
straigt pipe 2 1/4 in (or would 2 be better?)
dynomax super turbo (instead of glass pack)
no cat

should be cheap as a ****
would this provide enough back pressure? I know the super turbo would give more than a glass pack, and the y pipe going down the middle would give each side the same amt. of pressure. And it will sound good.

What do you think?

don't you mean y-pipe down the pass or drivers side? still have torque arm & driveshaft to deal with. and remember, stock motors designed to have cc in plkace for backpressure.

thats going to be tough to do!

Read CHC post about when he took off his cat! you get way too little back pressure! A hi flow unit is much better for our cars!

no cat on a V8 is fine, but not on our cars! we need the backpressure that the cat provides, so a better flowing unit is t he way to go. If you want to go cheap, the catco universal cat is like 50 bucks or something, but it will havve to be custom welded into your design there...

when these are in regular production, and I can see the reason to by another bender, then yes I will make a "Y" pipe with them.

Also DO NOT REMOVE YOUR C/C YOU WILL LOSE A GOOD AMOUNT OF TRQ!. TRUST ME!.

I suggest 2" for the cross pipes, and 2 1/2 to the rest of the system.

If the shops want to charge 300+ for installing something that can be installed at home fairly easily... well...

I would install the headers(trust me the biggest prob is dealing with the broken bolts) mine bolt in pretty easy. Install the cat-back(to do both will take 1 good day) then the next day go to the shop and have them make the "Y" pipe. Call around and you have your own ideas on price so stick to them. Personally I would not pay more then 100.

I don't have a cat right now, so thats why I said that. I haven't had one since I got the car. So maybe I'm missing out on some performance right now? Damn, when I redo this whole system, I should notice a pretty big increase hopefully.

he would install the headers and make the pipe for me for around 150...I have to drive about 30 miles to get to this place and to do that with open headers would not be a good idea. And to get it towed...I don't think so.

If its gonna be a lot of trouble to move the pipe to the center, I might not worry about it. But it gets real hot over by the pipe and burns my girlfriends legs and she doesnt really enjoy that. So maybe I'll just try to move it over a little if thats possible.

How much for just a dynomax cat, not the catback system, that will slip fit?
