Hypertech
Hypertech
Hey, this may be in the wrong area, but...
Anybody out there have either hypertech chip in thier 3.1?
I'd like to hear the opinions of it, and maybe some rough guesses on power gains.
Also performance international is the cheapest I've found. Only $160 for the ThermoMaster chip, plus $10 for the thermostat, and $150 for the StreetMaster chip.

My honest opinion , Hypercrap
.Because I have never heard anything good about there chips .
Id go with a Jetchip , superchip , fastchip . I know Billy (Ovrclock350) has a jetchip and he is pretty satisfied with it .
AND NO , I dont have a Hypercrap chip , but I do have a Hypertech thermastat .lol

Hypertech works as well as any of the others in full throttle mode.
Fast chip is reported to be the best through the pedal range.
My hypertech chip works great. If its more advance you want, the get it off of the crank. My shift points are not controlled by the computer, I have a non electronic 700r4 in my car custom built from scratch by Jimmy at Darrell Young Racing Trans in Simi valley Ca.

I emailed the three main ones. Jetchip, hypertech and superchip. Jetchip claimed best gains (dont rem figures sorry) but It also stated you HAD to run 91-92 octaine. Where hypertech was next and said they prefured you to use 91-92, but it was not needed. Then superchip and it was tweaked using 87-88 gas. Thats what I found out from emailing all three.
My 1991 has a Hypertech chip, as told by the previous owner it ran great and was scary fast, but due to not changing the stock thermostat the engine overheated and is now junk. I am an asst manager for advance auto and we can get most chips from our warehouse 2-3 days.

Those "off-the-shelf" eproms do very little. Add a few degrees of spark advance @ WOT, a dash more fuel (@ WOT), possibly lock your TCC a few miles higher (if auto) and turns the electric fans on sooner (if requires a new T-stat). You could do just as much in 15 minutes (and probably better) if you burnt your own.
I've seen them all and frankly, none are any good and a complete waste of money. You can accomplish the same thing by advancing your distributor a couple of degrees and increase the fuel pressure slightly for a LOT LESS. Neither do anything to properly control knock retard (which is the usual reason an engine doesn't perform as well as it should).
TunerCat should be releasing their new V6 tdfs shortly (they are available to "beta testers") so if you are SERIOUS about tuning your eprom, then you can do it the RIGHT WAY (which is the only way).
Yes, there are definite performance gains (and increased gas mileage) that can be obtained with a properly tuned eprom, but you'll NEVER get it with an "off-the-shelf" eprom. It's like buying a carb and expecting it to be "all set-up" properly right out of the box without having to touch a screw-driver to it. And that is only for fuel, not spark. Nobody does that with a carb (install as-is straight out of the box) yet everyone thinks you can do the same thing with an eprom?
If you are NOT prepared to burn your own eprom (a lot easier than you think), then just advance the distributor a few degrees and bump up the fuel pressure. At least you can try different timing/fuel to find what works and what doesn't.

Well, frankly, I don't have the time to learn how to burn the damn things, i really don't trucst myself and on top of that, the earlier mentioned cam, nitro and whatever combo isn't a great idea when you have 145,000 on your 3.1. I'd rather buy it from the box, and get a little better mileage and some power for minimum hassle, I live in an apartment, and don't have a shop to work on my cars, so plugging in a chip is easier.
Dynomax cat back form JC whiteney is 149.99 same as I paid, then add 50 for an install and it is still a better deal than a chip for power, sound, looks, and mileage. If your looking for mileage gains then ignition mods and a tune up should be your goal. When I lived in a apartment I added:
39.99 MSD Coil
29.99 Accel 8MM WIres
10.99 New Cap/Rotor several times
.99 ea Plugs
169.99 Accell 200+ ignition box

superchip is the worst ones out there. Most times they sell you the same chip you got. or you end up with less performace.
but that is just what i have heard. superchip is a ripe off.

It appears your sold on a chip so let me tell you this:
I had a hypertech unit I sold to a buddy. I did not think it did anything but remove the rev limiter. I purchased a fastchip form Ed Wright. He asked my mods as I ordered it so he "said could better calibrate it." I tossed it in and yes I think it helped, but I had the following mods first:
Cat back, high flow converter
MSD and Accel Ignition Setup
Tranny Rebuild/ Higher Stall/ Shift Kit
Just to name a few things. So I might have had more ofa notice verse a almost stock car.
Why do I say hold off is simple because in the end it will nto give you what you want. The only real SOTP difference is the CAM, Porting/Polishing, Nitrous, Roller Rocker and Springs. Save for those and in the end you will be 100X happier..

TealV6, you're in the right area!
I had an ADS chip, but pulled it after Glenn told me the deal with the ADS (and other manufacturer's) chips. I noticed no difference at all with or without the chip. So I agree with the other guys, do other mods first... save a chip for last, or don't even bother.
