Help with free project car...
Thanks ahead of time for any advice I get... I am just a girl(LOL), so cut me some slack. Here's the deal: I got an 86 berlinetta (2.8, 5 speed) for nothing. The engine was already out, and tranny dead. So, me being me, I built a 350 up with a mild cam (440 lift 260 dur),and a bunch of other stuff. All pollution controls are gone now, and she's carbureted.I have a th 350, and it's all back together, and runs great. That is, until I get to about 70 km/hr. (Still on the v6 speedo, but driving next to a friend in my new pick up to judge the speed). I get to about 3000-3500 rpm at this speed, and no more shifting...what gears came in the 5 speeds...3:42? I am trying to figure out the problem... I want to be able to drive on the highway without taking out a loan against my house for gas LOL. I checked all the vacuum, etc. , can't find anything wrong. (BTW, custom cut driveshaft to fit the thing in..pain in the rear.) Do I need to go to a higher gear, or what? I think this th350 has no overdrive, but don't hold me to that. But regardless, there has to be something I can do to make this work...
I am on the verge of retarded here... my other camaro is a 1991 RS, and never needed any mods like this, and all my mechanic friends are Ford people (I guess they didn't teach them good taste in mechanic school), so I need some help. I have 15 inch camaro rims on the thing... they came with the car, and I can't think of any other pertinent info right now... help me out here!!!
PLEASE!!!!!

Car: 1991 Corvette Coupe
Engine: L98
Transmission: 700R4/4L60 same trans different name
a th350 is used for performance, not economy
your SOL
even if you switch to a higher (numerically lower) gear, your off the line is going to suck really bad considering the TH350 has a 2.60 first gear
if you want the best of both switch back to the T5, just be ready to rebuild it every so often

Thank you... told you I was on the verge of retarded.
Here's another question... since I had to custom cut the driveshaft, and I took out the third link in the suspension and created a modified version of 4 link with upper and lower control arms to facilitate dual exhaust( same set up as the Vette..worked out very nicely, too..), is there another tranny that has about the same size casing as the th350 with short tailstock??? I really like my duals, and would like to keep that set up, but there's not a whole lot of room under there with all the custom exhaust work. Everything is pretty much in the only place it can go, so a different casing would just mess up the whole thing.
Whaddya think?

Good with motors, but not trannies, eh?
If you had found an earlier model v8 car with the TH200C 3-speed transmission, you could've used it's driveshaft. Why not install a 700r4? Then you'll get overdrive, and you'll save gas. Until then, your RPM's will always be high on the street with a TH350. The TH350's 3rd gear (highest gear) has a ratio of 1.00, equivilant to the TH700r4's 3rd gear (ratio 1.00). The 700r4's 4th gear, overdrive, has a ratio of 0.70, which would drop your RPM's at highway speeds.
I believe Gear Vendors sells a bolt-on overdrive kit for all transmissions, and it runs around $5000. It replaces the tailshaft of your 350 (or a 400 or a 700r4 or a 200-4R), and gives you two more gears that you can use in conjunction with the existing trans gears. But if you don't have room for a different trans case under the car, you probably won't have room for this unit.
Are you sure your true duals are giving you any HP that's worthwhile? Plenty of V8's with more mods than yours are running through a y-pipe and single muffler. I would suggest dumping the dual exhaust and putting your 4 speed transmission in.
Uh, hey, wait a minute, why are you posting this in the V6 forum? You should repost this message in either the General Tech forum or the Transmission forum or the Exhaust forum. Just because your car came with a V6 doesn't mean you have to come here to ask about your V8!

Marriage kinda gives me the urge to run like a girl (in the other direction), but maybe with the right offer....
And Tom, I posted here because I figured I'd go where the experts were on what my car has in the rear end that it came with (a v6), I thought maybe there was some detail that I might need to know that I had overlooked. Or maybe some trick or technicality or something.
Or maybe I just like you guys better....:hail:
