I've made a decision
I've made a decision
I've been thinking, and for a while now I've been wanting to get rid of my 6 and get an older 8 and mod it up, but after careful consideration, I just can't seem to get rid of the 6! I think it's grown on me too much, considering I take exquisite care of it, I RARELY see another RS in as good as shape as mine. Browsing through Summit's catalog yesterday it seemed to me that there are more and more parts for our 3.1's and 2.8's. So, what I think I'm going to do, is instead of getting an 8, just drop in a rebuilt 3.1 and a rebuilt trans, mod up it up a bit to make it a bit faster (exhaust, cam, ignition, intake), stuff like that and concentrate more on the appearance, since mine is already in pretty good shape, and besides, I never race anyway so what's the point of getting an 8? Although if I had the chance, and the exterior was in good shape, I'd get it. Point is, I seen an EXTREMELY NICE black RS w/ red racing stripes today, and that was the turning point, it was even a 6! The car just plain stood out! So, I hope more v6 guys do the same, mod up a 6, it might be harder, but I bet it can be done if done correctly. We might not be faster than a 350 w/ the same mods, but wouldn't it shock a junked-up, out of tune, 305 or 350 cocky camaro owner that he was just wasted by a lil ole 6? Sorry for the length guys, but I just think it will put a smile on my face knowing I'm the only guy with a done up 6 that can hang w/ 305's without the juice.

I see your point.
If you don't race, then why get a racing car.
If you want appearence stay with the V-6 car, thats most of the reason we have them. We want the look but not the gas or insurance bill.

Actually I'm sick in the head, that's why I keep my V6, sentimental stuff. I could afford the gas/insurance, and will one day have a V8 car, but I'll never get rid of this one. Kids on my street one day will be saying "look out for old man TomP, here he comes flyin' around the corner in that ancient car! Can you believe it doesn't fly in the air like ours?"
Just keep in mind the price, 92CAMRORS.. hard parts might be inexpensive, but you've gotta figure in machine work. And some things lead to others.. example, why not hot-tank the block to clean it all up? And then you've gotta replace cam bearings (hot tanking destroyes 'em). Might as well magnaflux the block, too. And then, what about the rods? Re-use, or magnaflux? Why not shot-peen & polish 'em to make 'em stronger? Don't forget the heads; hot-tank, magnaflux, valve job at least- and do you have them do a port job, or try your own? Can your valves be ground down or will you have to replace some? Want to increase compression? Mill the deck too much and you'll have to mill the intake manifold to fit the shorter angle for the heads. Will you overbore the block to it's max, because if you do, you can't rebuild the block again (no metal left for a "cleanup" operation). See what I mean?
Granted, these prices are the same for a V8 engine, but it's just something to keep in mind when you think about doing a rebuild.

Yea, I see your point about the rebuilds, but then again, I never intended to do the bigger things to the engine until it was rebuilt, or simply buy another already rebuilt 3.1, right now I am content w/ just exhaust and intake, and maybe something else, figuring that my exhaust was put on really sloppy, and my old intake, more specifically, air filter, was NEVER CHANGED! The guy who had the car before me did not take care of it at all, I bought it,and it was covered in cig smoke, bra was scratching the paint in front, the louvers were all rusted out, a dent in the front fender, and the engine wasn't taken cared of. If you would see it today, you'd think it was a totally different car, and it is. The funny thing is, the guy still comes by once in a while to check up on the car (he loved the car, but he was too much in debt, so he let me have it real cheap), and he gets pretty jealous, LOL, considering how nice it is now. It would just make me feel good knowing I took care of one great six! Honestly though, I would rather have a third-gen camaro than any other car(even a first-gen SS/RS!), even fourth-gens. How they came from the factory, nothing can beat the look of the camaro, it's a shame GM put em down. They are one heck of a great car.

i weighed the costs of a brand new 3.4 or a slightly used 350
the slightly used 350 won
i race, i feel if you want a f-body you want it for the whole package not just looks (only looks= *****)
insurance aint gonna be different cuz they still think its a 6 banger
most people i talk to with 350 TPI's get BETTER gas mileage than my 6 banger.......so i figured.......why not?
besides i got really tired of hanging out with kids who have 12 second cars, with mine having nice looks and no performance to back them up...........i, in short, felt like a *****

The 350 is always going to win. It is probably the most universal and popular engine on the planet. It's cheap, and easily modifiable for about any horsepower you desire. Don't do anything with the V6 unless like the challenge of making a slug of an engine go fast, and if you want to spend the amount of casht on it. The V8 will be cheaper in the long run if power and speed is what your're after.
I worshiped my V6. It was my dream, my life, everyone including me thought I would be buried in it. Now I own a red 1997 Z28 and do not regret the move one bit. I ran 16.01 and I never got to run it with the new timming chain or the never used headers I have for sale, but i bet it would easily hit the high 15's. And yes we are talking the 1/4 not the 1/8th for those who must know. What I did so it lived on was all my good parts went to my buddies 89 2.8 RS... Soon his car will be running 15's with all the parts we took off and he has now. 15's in any car I think is good. Now insuance really was not an issue. I now have full coverage and a 500 deductable for only 200 more per year. Now I am 26, married, college grad and yada yada yada, but wow a LT-1 is fast....
