Where do the connectors hang out? Near the top of the engine, near the fenders, near the firewall, etc? How many wires, what color wires, etc? I take it that you have an '83? Was the car made in Canada? I think they had less strict emissions regulations than the United States, so you might have a United States wiring harness on a Canadian motor, leaving lots of wires unused. Just a guess. Either that, or if the wires are all near the top of the engine, then someone majorly messed with your carb!
MDv6man would be the guy to answer; he's got an '83 2.8L that he knows like the back of his hand...

Thank you for the kind words Tom!
Only reason I know it so well was because the engine had to come out three times to fix prior mistakes!
But yeah I can probably help you...
Here's what I need you to do 83Firebird420...
Take some pics of your engine bay. I don't have a digital camera and it would be easier to see what is disconnected rather than photo every connection. After the pics are taken and uploaded, photoshop some numbers in for each connection and I'll be able to tell you where they go.
I'll bet you have factory AC, too.
Passenger side by front of the engine is a "electric plunger attached to carb" to keep idle "high" during AC Compressor operation.
One connection goes there.
Another.
Driver side front.
One is for water temp that goes to driver cylinder head.
THREE OTHERS
ONE is on side of carb that goes to the heater (gasket under carb) for the incoming "Cold air".
Two up front are for smog stuff. IF your FACTORY manifold has the fittings plugged up, need not worry.
Only worry about the carb heater wiring (as it's hot all time engine on) & the idle compensator for the ac, same story always have electricity going to it.
Of course some wires do go to alternator, those just fall into place.
Hope that sorts out your wiring.
