Rebuilding Distributor

Ok, I am gonna be pulling the distributor outta the camaro ( *** I hate these things).

But now that I know to mark it TWICE, I will do better

Re-building it.... Found karls posting on how to do it. Thanks

What grit sand paper is recommended??

How long will it take me??

The parts that are rusted, and I will be sanding it off, whats best way to keep them from rusting again?? And not throw the "balance" of it off??

Why use the SBC gasket, and not the one designed for these cars??

Have pickup coil at house
ignition module on order
Think I have a gasket for this shaft, not the SBC
LOTS N LOTS of sandpaper at house
3 cans of carb cleaner at house
two tubs of wheelbearing grease, is that the right kind??

What else am I missing here for parts??

Thanks for bringing to top joe, but I have it built now.

I got it out the car, found that the "crown" thats rivited to the base had one of its "points" bent down and not ligning up like it should, plus all were rusted.

One of the "prongs" on the spinning part was also bent, and all were rusted.

We tested the pickup coil, it "tested" fine, at colder temps. The car will start at colder temps, but not warmer. The protective coating over it had all melted away and the wires inside were starting to corrode/mold I guess you could say.

Now the :sillylol: The shaft was so hard to turn, I had to fully grip both pieces to make it spin. Now to get it out, I couldn't just pull it out, I had to HAMMER it out with a extension to reach thru the tube on the base!!!

Got it out, sanded the shaft so smooth, then sanded the tube. Sanded as much rust as I could of both parts. Installed new Pick-up coil, and is awating a ICM from jegs.com, and will go get gasket tommorow.

For the ones that have been helping my on my "dies/hesitates/wont start when warm issue, Do you think this was/is my full problem??

Much thanks for the advise, this was OVER NEEDED :hail: :hail:

That's excellent to hear how you have overcome this challenge of a distributor.
Rather easy animal to tame, isn't it!?!?!
Another way to polish it....

Can you say bench grinder with wire brush?
Make sure ya clean the inside of the shaft housing.
Look what came out..
Rifle cleaning brushes or baby bottle brushes.

Glad to know I helped make it simple for ya
Merry Christmas!

Hopefully I can put it in the car right, and that be the problem.

Keep fingers crossed for me in the next couple days.

WOOHOOO, just got my accel 35362 in. Going to stop buy parts store on way home and pick up the gasket for the distrib.

Keep fingers crossed for me that rebuilding the distrib was the problem. I keep getting alot of heat from the MRS cause the car being broke.

Once this is fixed, back to the engine swap
