yeah, there's a lot of stuff on the net to get or make interface and get free software for 5.0/5.7 engines,
any ideas how to read 3.1/2.8 engine data? any links?

Your Diag port.
top right hand 2(on the end). get paper clip. Unwind and stick in those 2 holes. Turn you key to "ON" watch your SES light. record the flashes. look up the codes.

you can go to google and search for ALDL, or 8192baud it will have the US 16 PIN diag port, you want to short the A & B terminals.

If the free stuff (IE: Moates) has a config file or source with it it can be used w/the 3.1l V6. There are only two differences between the TPI and the V6 MPFI (90-92) ALDL streams.

One is the data within the stream itself and the other is the header byte for packet requests. Other then that they are identical in timing, packet length, command byte. . . can also use the same 2 transistor interface the TPI guys use. Note: do NOT use the 10K resistor that seems to be so popular (between two ALDL conn pins).

I've been using WinALDL for data logging, it supports the 2.8 engines and I am sure would work with the 3.1. Just use the 1985 or 1986 2.8 MPFI setting. I use it with the cable specified by the diagram at the WinALDL site...which is a 10K resistor setup. RBob: What is wrong with the 10K setup...?

The 10K resistor changes the mode of the ECM. It can cause the timing to change, can force closed loop, change the idle speed, among a bunch of other stuff. The actual changes are dependent upon the particular calibration.
