tranny problem...help meeee

tranny problem...help meeee

little by little my tranny wouldnt shift till hiiigh rpms...then somtimes it would shift normal...then one day it died at a red light, started right back up, but every gear is neutral...a friend told me to replace the governor...i did...still doing the same thing although i did have a little trouble getting the new governor gear onto the gear assembly, could i need to replace the whole assembly...or just the little gear? btw...i have an 87 v6 w/700r4 tranny

Transmission: 700R4
Go ask on the Transmissions forum. Your transmission is the same model and has the same internals as the v8 transmission; v6 transmissions just have a smaller case. Doesn't sound like it'd be the governor, though. Either way, the trans forum can help.

tom are you saying that you cannot hook up a smallblock up to a 90-700r4 ??? bc i was planning on doing it here soon!!! Please let me know

The bellhousing of the V6 & V8 trans is different between them. A 3rd gen f-body V6 is a 60 deg engine, a 3rd gen V8 is a 90 deg engine. So the auto trans from one will not bolt to the engine of the other.

700R4's are used on the V8.

thanks i didnt know that if you were to replace the trannies with a v8 one would the drive shaft still line up??

I'm pretty sure you don't have to do anything to the driveshaft untless you are going to a TOTALLY different transmission (like a th-350 or 400) I'm doing the same thing to my car as we speak I'll let you know what I run into.
