Anyone else have this problem

When i hit the brakes, the gas meter goes down to E, but only when i press them quickly. And if i accelerate it'll go up a little bit. Also, like a 1/4 of the middle of the Speedo doesnt light up. Anyone know what im dealin with here? Thanks

Light in the back of the speedo area probably burned out...

All the gauges on these cars seem to be very sensitive...mostly the tachs, gas gauges, and alt output gauges. My gas gauge needle moves quite a bit depending on whether I'm accelerating, braking, or cruising. Trust the cruise reading...everything else is off.

LOL, my gas gauge is the only one that bounces around. It looks like its on a trampoline going on a relativly smooth road. You would have thought after a few years of that occurance GM would have tried to fix the problem.

Remove the cluster and replace all the bulbs since your there. Then clean and tighten the fuel gauge connections even though they seem tight. And lastly be sure there are no bad or missing fuses. A fues that isn't in the circuit being tested that is bad still may cause a feedback in the troubled circuit. hope that helps...

Well i know that most cars have "floaters" in the tanks so every time you hug a steep turn or basically tip the tank at any angle the needle will fluxuate. It's just common place. But it would be a good idea to think electrical and check the hook ups.

agreed the "floater" sending unit is what goes bad 99.9% of the time nothing within the gauge panel itself

Cool til you run out of gas on a 'full tank'.... Mine bounces just a tad...it's my oil pressure that bounces the most. 20-40 psi warm.....not to mention my tach reads, at a MINIMUM, about 5000-5500 rpms. Whenever I TAP the pedal, it flies past 7000 and sits at the bottom.

heheh I guess I'm lucky to just have the trampoline gas gauge. And all the others work perfectly.

Uhm.....do you mean dip down like to the point of stall? I ALMOST laughed my *** off at this until I realized that it could be a real question. If it's near the point of stall...could be several things..my main guesses would be fuel filter or sticky IAC valve. Fuel filter-Replace. Sticky IAC valve-Remove and carefully clean with carb cleaner.

I have the same prob with my 3.4L. I was told it could be the mass airflow sensor. I'm kinda interested in what it is. I just let my car warm up in the winter longer and the prob disipates.

He has no MAF sensor, he's speed density...MAP instead.

MAF is a big lunky sucker fitted in the air intake tubing..restricts air into a section of it to vibrate or heat or something a filament up, which tells the computer how much air is incoming.

MAP is an indirect method of air measuring...a sensor is hooked into the back of the intake manifold that measures air intake by something to do with the vacuum or air density or volume, I forget..and compares that data to a chart programmed into the computer's memory, and uses that. MAF disadvantages are it restricts flow to measure, BUT it also is flexible in that it will work accurately with extra airflow and extra power made. MAP I believe isn't flexible enough so if you start making a sh*tload of power, it won't calculate right....
