who here lets other people drive there car??

for the first time i let a friend use my car for a date he had. i would never let him use it before because he drives his cars really hard, but he is my best friend so i had to let him one day. so ya anyway, he brought it back to me today sayin there is something really wrong with my car its slow. he figures its a sports car so it must be fast. let me tell u when he said that i felt so stupid because my car is runnin fine its just not that fast at all, the boggin just makes it worse though, alot worse.
from now on i will never let anyone drive my car till i get the v8 in in a month. does anyone else go through this with there friends. where u feel ashamed of your cars engine ( oh and i got another question, is it just me or does r cars feel like they are not goin fast when they really are. maby the size shape of them?)

Nobody drives my cars, unless I KNOW they can drive. I don't mean some pansy 70 year old, you'd better be able to toss the rearend out sideways, and compensate on the throttle at the same time to be able to drive one of my cars.

When I got the new clutch into the 2.8/T5, I let my buddy Adam (Moderator at allfordmustang.com) take it for a spin to help break the clutch in. His exact words -

"Dang... quick for a v6!" (he's got a lightly modded '95 5.0 GT)

I ran a 17.4 on a 2.6 60', and severe traction problems (kept wanting to get a little sideways in 2nd. A posi should fix that!)

When I first got the car, I would look down at the spedo to discover i was doing 50 when i thought i was going about 30. They feel slower than they are.

Only my dad when he takes it to get fixed...dude the guy bought it for me. Other than that, two best friends of mine, i didn't like one of them cuz he drives it hard, but he wasn't cruel about slow or anything, he was used to something slower. the other friend just went to drop some1 off and thats it. That was sooooo long ago... i will haven't ever let a girl drive my car. Oh ya my new best friend, cuz he was learning how to drive, and i was showing him pointers on driving a thirdgen. He got one after he drove mine.
I owe a friend a spin in my car, cuz i drove his when he got it.
all this was long ago, but the one that i owe should happen in the near future

I have let a bunch of people drive my car... My mom and dad, my brother took it with him to college for about a month once. I have let a few friends drive it too. There is a friend of mine who borrows it about once every 6 weeks to go on a date in it. I don't mind... as long as I know the person and trust them well enough. I know that I am taking a risk, but I have never had anyone bring it back messed up, other than my brother. He ran it off the end of a construction road and dropped the whole car several feet. It messed up the ball joints in the front end, and I had to replace them.

I have a friend who let his then-girlfriend drive his 1969 Firebird 400 4 speed. He was in the car with her, and told her not to get on it hard. She didn't listen, jammed on the gas, lost control, and ran it off into a ditch. It messed up the nose and front air dam, front lights and one of his fenders. She has had a history of wrecks, so there is no way I would have ever let her drive my car. Like I said earlier, you have to really know and trust the people you loan your car to.

I don't have many people complain about my car being slow. Most of the people who I let drive it aren't too interested in doing that, or either they are used to something that is a lot slower.

I don't think a Civic can outrun anything

Ha ha...the few times I've let my friends drive my cars, I've regretted it. One powerbraked my Camaro..the other decided he'd romp the gas on my moderately modded 5.0 GT stang with bald rear tires..I almost killed him. I miss that Camaro. It was a lot quicker than it felt. It FELT like an 18 second car, but on the G-Tech I netted 16.48 @ 85 mph with a pretty good hook. With tirespin I managed more like 16.6 @ 84-85. Best 0-60 mph I got with it was 8.28 with an INSTANT hook..dunno what I did but I think I managed to have my tires heated just enough and stalled it to the torque converter just perfect...it WAS luck because I had no working tach!! I went out expecting high 16's..I was pretty damn happy to have gotten low 16's, even if it WAS only on the G-Tech! But it STILL felt like a 4 cylinder to me except when I laid the pedal down and squealed the tires for several seconds on dry pavement before taking off. That's always fun.

Also..never let your slightly drunk dad drive your new car when he hasn't driven a V8 for a long time... He'll think it's not too different than the old six, lay down about 1/3rd pedal nonchalantly, and end up sideways when the torque curve peaks with the funniest look on his face you will EVER see....

I'd let my dad drive my GTA in a heartbeat. Mainly because he raced Formula Ford, Formula V, and a few other classes. He's used to driving a car to its limits, and I'd bet he's a better driver than I am because of his racing experience.

My mom, well she learned on Olds 442 with the 350 rocket. And drove a Buick Skylark when they actually had decent power plants in them. So yeah, I'd let her drive it.

My sisters? No way, they get to learn on the 88hp escort before I'll even let them THINK of sitting behind the wheel of the GTA.

"Bill, which ones the gas pedel?" she asked one day.

"Okay, get out of the car" I said. "I'm driving, we'll go driving in the lot another day."

Every time I get in the car its a race. Thats not to say I speed everywhere, just that I practice the skills associated with road racing. I constantly practice things like cutting the apex and other nuances of racing that aren't useful in every day driving. But it doesn't replace the experience gained on the track going full out. Just gotta get the cash so I can go run like the dickens on a road course. Performance driving school would be nice. Sadly, I'm poor. So its not going to happen any time soon.

Well, the mechanics drive my car in the shop so they drive my car. My mom drove my car once. Other than that, no one drives my car. Actually, no one wants to drive my car. People who don't know what a thirdgen is think my car is fast. In highschool, my friends thought I had 300 bhp under the hood, which would have been true if I had the 5.7l with a few mods.

The only reason why I would not let anyone borrow my car is because I don't want it to break down on them. I know all the little kinks of my car better than anyone else, so I drive my car in a special way than a normal new car.

If I had a new car, I would definately let them borrow it because it would be reliable. My car is fairly reliable now, but since it is 14 years old, something is going to happen more frequently than on a newer car.

Sometimes it is embarrasing to admit that you have a 2.8l V6 in an American car.

I always think I am going faster than what my speedo says, at least from the sound of my engine. I accelerate for a good 3 seconds making a loud noise doing it thinking that I am going at least 35mph and I look down at my speedo and see that I have just got to 20mph. Now that is embarrassing. My car doesn't like to accelerate slowly to 35. If I don't go more the about 50% throttle, my car will feel like an obeast slug.

First off if your friend does not have a car himself then tell him your car is obviously faster then his. You don't complain when your lent a car to the person.

Second I have let my Fiancee drive my car several times, she loved the handling, but said it was really low and different to drive.

Third, don't worry about what others think. If you like the way your car is then keep it that way. I don't like Honda's with 3 foot wings, but if that person is happy with it, let him keep it that way.
Why should your opinion over rides someone elses.

i find these v6's will feel a lot faster if you dont just go WOT right off the bat. gradually ease it up to full throttle and you'll be doing 70 in a few seconds it seems. im gonna have a friend stop watch my 0-60 one day just out of curisiosity. what should a 3.1L automatic be getting for a 0-60 time?

Well...something interesting to note...my mom was the owner of my Firebird...so I would trust her to drive it...my dad sometimes...but he's not exactly the best driver...i've let me girl drive it a few times when i'm in the car...she baby's it compared to beating on her car...and a few friends...but all had owned thirdgens at one time so it was cool...but yea...if you're not careful with these cars...you'll fly and not even know it...gotta love it...

Tek..we talking stock? Stock I'd say around 10.5 seconds.

As I stated earlier and in another post, my 3.1 auto would pull 8.28 with a PERFECT hook...on an ordinary ATTEMPT to hook I pulled consistent 8.5's or right about there. My mods were minimal. Catco high flow cat, Dynomax Super Turbo catback, Blue Streak cap + rotor, Rapidfire plugs, Taylor 8mm wires, K&N filter with stock intake assembly minus can. So I know the car was capable of a tad more..possible even a flat 8 seconds with a good intake and once again the perfect hook.

I've noticed that too about lower power cars. I don't believe that you are actually accelerating faster, just that the lateral acceleration force increases, and continues to increase as you push the pedal further. It feels like the car just won't stop pulling, but in reality its accelerating slower than a WOT run.

My escort does this, sometimes you can make people think the car is modified if you do this.

i've let my dad drive mine now and then. He only wanted to drive it because he was working on the truck and needed parts. Says he can't stand getting in and out.

Sister wanted to drive it to school one day.
"It looks cool and i'm tired of driving my Isuzu"

And one of my friends drove once when we came back from the pub because he was the dd and i was drunk. He knew it had a V6 but said it had more power than he thought it would.

Usually i just stay sober when we take my car. I tell all the other drunk people if they puke in there i'll tear into them like a hobo into a bologna sandwich. And then wipe it up with their clothes.

nobody's puked yet.

for the most part i hate it when people ask to borrow (fortunatly it's not very often)my car. have to tell them no somehow and so when i had a problem with mine, i don't like to ask anyone else if i can borrow theirs. it's pretty bad

I'm the only one that drives my car. My dad drove it twice before, but only because I couldn't. I got it impounded because of expired tags, and the other time was when he was test driving it to see what the hell that grinding sound from the rear of the car was. Figured that since he was an ex-mechaninc, he would be able to figure it out. He did, and I replaced the pinion bearings, now it just whines because the pinion depth isn't perfect. Will be getting that fixed in early April hopefully.

I've let a couple people drive my car. My brother(who drives a 2000 z28) says it handles better than his car. I'm pretty sure it's faster now too, but we haven't gotten a chance to race yet since we don't live together. He was careful with it. The opposite was true with two of my friends.. one made some scrapes on the side parking because he's used to a smaller car and another spun out in a turn where he decided to stomp on the gas for the first time. Most people are afraid to drive my car because they're used to driving hondas and such. I would let my girlfriend and one of my friends drive it, but like I said, they wouldn't unless I was really plastered.
