V6 T56
V6 T56
hey guys, I bought my 92 RS about 6 months ago working my *** off putting in 4th gen seats, new dash, better consol, new headliner, paint, and i was gonna put a LS1 with a T56. Over the months ive come accustomed to the V6 with the manual tranny and the dynomax exhaust. I have my other cars for speed but i just like this one and i wanna keep it V6- i put it on our dyno and its at around 250 horse right now. i just replaced the clutch, throw out bearing, pressure plate, new flywheel, and piolet bushing. Now i need synchros, rather than rebuilding the tranny i want the 6 speed. Can i use all my old T5 bell housing, and clutch parts on the T56 or do i need everything from the flywheel back to replace it?

for all intents and purposes, it should not be done
the gearing in the T56 is very high compared to the gearing in the T5
your going to lose all of your low end
first gear in a V6 T5 is about 4.06
first gear in a T56 is about 2.68
try driving your car starting in 2nd gear and you'll see what i mean
now that thats out of the way, lets take a look at what would need to be done to get one to fit
i have heard of a certain company making an adapter plate to fit the T56 to a T5 bellhousing, you would need that
you would then need a clutch driven disc that would fit the T56 and be small enough for the V6 flywheel
a stock V6 pressure plate and flywheel would be used
you would then need to have your driveshaft cut and rebalanced because adding the adapter plate adds length to the T56
you will need to fabricate a custom crossmember
you will need to hack apart your center console
because a "normal" T56 installation sets the shifter 2 inches back
this installation will set the shifter even further back because of the adapter plate
its going to be very expensive to do, and IMHO not worth the effort nor the money, because your going to lose your bottom end which is what you want for the street
also, you need to check the input shaft length to make sure there is no sustantial difference............might need to be cut, might not be long enough
yea... i would like to know as well... ::hides papers to take notes with::
i would normally find it hard to believe, but i guess its just that i would love to know that someone has pulled that much off!

1. Your car doesn't have enough torque to hold 6th gear.
2. Your engine is a 60 degree engine, while the T56 uses a 90 degree bolt pattern. Making these two work together IF it's even possible (which I'm pretty much 95% sure isn't) will be extremely expensive.
3. I'm going to call BS on your HP until you post up mods. Even then, most likely...I'm going to call BS. You're talkinga bout 110 more HP than stock. If your car is streetable, then I'm amazed.

hehe, neither would I....think you'd be feeling that sooner more than later. but, the Nitrous kit i see out there for 2.8L fiero's is a hundred shot, think adjustable to maybe 125, but not 100% but do remember that it's a hundred shot. if that's true, then wouldn't our 2.8L's be able to hold it stock? Hopefully someone else will try that, cause i'm sure not gonna blow my motor up right now....(knock on wood)

Is the input shaft the same length/diameter as the T5 for the V6? If so, just bolt the bell housing from the T5 to the T56, and theres your start. There WILL be more to it than that - and you should be able to use the standard V6 clutch set in it.
250hp?
What is with all this 'The V6's T5 has a 4.06 first gear'? All the info I've seen points to a 2.95 first, and so on, to a .73 final (5th).
Please post where you got this 4.06 first gear info.

V8 T5's are geared with a 2.95 first
big difference
also, you cannot "just" bolt the bellhousing to the T56
you need an adapter plate that i am not even sure is being produced, i just heard rumors that it was going to be produced
what i heard was: "an adapter plate to bolt the stock T5 bellhousing to the T56"
in other words the adapter plate goes between the bellhousing and trans
you will also need to have the driveshaft cut
it isnt "just" a simple bolt in for a V6 as you may like to think

Never said I was perfect
You're right about the 14/26 spline too, I didn't even think of that.
