Good news and Bad news

Bad news is that on my way home, stuck in the stop and go traffic that L.A. is known for, my car lost almost all of it's power. If I laid on the gas, the car just sputtered and went really slow, but if I eased into it, it seemed ok. I've had this problem before and it was a bad coil.

So the first thing I did was go to Pep Boys down the street from my house. They brought their Multimeter out to the car and tested the coil, sure enough...toast.

Good news...bought my self my first official aftermarket mod...Accel HEI Coil. Got home and remote mounted it so it doesn't get toasted again by the exhaust heat.

Does anyone know if it gives any kind of HP gain...just curious. Havn't driven it yet, but it starts and revs in the driveway like it should now.

Um, no. There should really be no difference in HP over a stock coil - now, driveablility could be marginally improved, and mileage up a tad, if you increased your plug gap to say... .060"

right on. Thanks for the info. We're about to see how it works, going to buy 2 new exhaust manifold bolt to fix my crazy leak. Tick, Tick, Tick...gets freaking annoying.

Power increase from a coil, sorry, but I have to laugh at that. The only thing you may notice is a slight increase in the rpm range and and maybe a 1/3 of a mile of a gallon more, but you definately won't feel a power increase with the just the coil.


I put my Accel coil in the stock location. Its doing fine, heat doesn't seem to be a problem in my engine bay. Even my original coil still works.

Oh yeah, plus you will be able to get more voltage to the spark plugs which should make your combustion process burn a little better.

that's why I ask. I need to know what this will give me. Runs a little smotther now, but i think it's not really worth the extra cash. I am however I spent the extra money on it as this one comes with a lifetime warranty from pep boys where as the OEM coil didn't. Thanks for the info guys.

On the exhaust leaks...mine were a pain till we started using 2.8l header gaskets. That helped a ton. They actually last a while now... Felpro makes them, but I don't think a normal part store will carry them. I would ask though. I get mine at Barnett Racing. Maybe Summit carries them?

just got the manifold leak taken care of. Went out and bought replacement bolts and I got the Felpro gaskets down the street at the little Mom and Pop auto parts store. They seem to have everything down there, even a little machine shop. Sounds and tuns great now. I think I'm gonna get a sound clip of it tonight and post it. I seem to have picked up a little extra power now that the manifold is taking the exhaust where it is supposed to and it lines up the right way now. I am very happy.
