Backfire woes...

Had some arcing... replaced the wires. Backfire is still there - #6 cylinder it seems. When it pops, too, I can see some smoke drift up from where the egr blockoff plate is, and near the exhaust. Would an exhaust leak cause a backfire? I know the car is running a bit rich as it is...

Exhaust leaks will cause backfires and misfires, depending...

I would say try adjusting the timing a few degrees, clamp it back down and take if for a drive. See if that changes anything. I know my car would not run great at at 10*, but would run better adjusted some. I see you have adjusted, but maybe you need to set it back or up some.

Second, EGR it can cause a lot of problems, I would really check into that.

Third, your exhaust leak and running rich could be a bad combination get those checked out.

I don't have EGR. What I have, is a bad case of working on PMD engines too damn much!

I set the #1 cylinder as the driver's side front. Needless to say, IT'S ALL WRONG. Jesus freaking ..... grrr!!

Tomorrow I'll tear it all apart, and do it the right way - #1 cylinder is the front passanger side, for anyone that wants to know.

Good to see you figured out your problem. So let me get this straight you were timing your car from your #2 plug, but you thought it was the #1 right.

I can see why your car would problems running.

Anyway great to hear its fixed.

check your egr valve. mine had a broken screw and it would backfire between the egr tube and the valve. also saw a puff of smoke when it happened. feel all around the egr, if theres a leak you'll feel air pulsing out.
