Fuel Pump

Ok the fuel pump is supposed to prime, yes. Well today on my J-Body I noticed when I turn my key, I can hear the pump for a sec or two, then I cant but it starts just fine, does it stop making the louder noice when its primed? If it does, my jumper wire power system to the pump on my Firebird never primes, it keeps making the loud noice.

I do this every time I start my car. First as your turn your key forward it turns on accessories and such, the next click after that, right before the start/crank position is when it primes the pump. I can hear it from inside the car, it lasts about 3-4 seconds. I'm not sure what you are referring to with the "louder" noise. If my system is partially primed (Existing pressure of previous driving) then it will change tones from a higher noise while priming to a lower one. I'm not exactly sure if that will help you, just my 2 cents.

I'm not a 100% sure, I'm running the stock pump, it could be different if your pump is aftermarket or something. Is there a reason that you have it wired like that? Do you use it as a kill switch or something?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. Did you go from fuel injection to carb, and ditched the computer? Never noticed my fuel pump sound, the exhaust is too loud.

no fuel pump circut and oil switch circut are fired so I have to power it myself, and just turn your key to acc TomP, and listen to the pump. Dont turn the car on.

Hmmm, I would have to say this is indeed a problem. Becuase I'm pretty sure as soon as my fuel lines are primed, it turns off the pump, and doesn't start the pump till I crank the engine. I think by you running it by switch it just keeps running and running and perhaps you are running the car rich...?

And TomP, PeNZ is correct, the position right before ignition/start is when you hear the pump prime the system. I do it every time I start my car. It gets the fuel to the engine before you go to crank it.

:sillylol: No, no, when I said I never noticed my fuel pump sound, I meant that I never heard any difference in noise between "priming" and "running". Don't forget I've changed my pump twice, and always talk about not "jumping the key" from off to crank! And if your wires are fried, you should really fix them...

Doesn't take long to trace out all the wires, and might help you sell the car. Visit this link for my code 54 chart; it diagnoses the whole electrical system of the fuel pump. Ignore the fact that you're not getting code 54- 54 is low voltage to the fuel pump, which is why this chart will work for you. Takes maybe 20 minutes, and you just need a test light.

Looks like you guys are going to keep me on my toes... I gotta make sure I word everything "perfectly" from now on! And as part of that, remember this chart is from a service manual for a 2.8. Your relay location may vary... I'm hoping the wire colors are the same.
