New 'OLD' Problem

For clarity's sake here is my prior thread (which should act as a prologue)

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=186333

Now, I replaced the entire distributer, the catalytic converter, and the pcv valve as of last time I posted.

Now, I have been out of town at the river and such so today was really the first time I got to play with the car and drive it at all. I woke up bright and early, renewed my tags, repaired a flat that I came home to, and drove out of town to a friend's house.

Upon arriving I noticed my temp was a little higher then normal. (around 220) so I killed the engine and checked on the radiator fan. (which I have directly wired to the battery on a toggle switch I ran into the cab of the car) The fan was not working.

Anyway, after tracing the power through all the wires I came to the conclusion that the motor on the fan died. I got a new motor for the fan and installed it.

Anyway, the current problem is this. During all this I had to move the car, I went to start it, it started up, and died just as fast as it started. No matter if I pushed the gas pedal or what.

(for clarity: This means none of my previous repairs fixed the problem.) I replaced everything I can think of that could cause this issue just shy of a few things.. The fuel pump, the computer, and the thought came to me that maybe it is a faulty sensor.

Can someone please give me some advice as to what this issue could be? I am putting way more money into this car then I will ever get out of it again, and I really just want it to work.

Thanks everyone.

Ok, Update:

Replaced the fan motor just to find that the wiring had melted or something. (not 100% certain as I have not pulled the old wiring, but have ran new wiring and even the old motor worked again)

We are replacing the mass air flow sensor (since it seems as if the last owner got it at a junk yard by the writing on it) and time will tell if that helps with any of my problems.

Please jump in with any input, I am just throwing around money at this point hoping to make a difference, and let this be no surprise, other then spending money, I have no clue what I am doing. I am just replacing what I can do myself, that I think could be causing these issues.

Thanks for the help as always.

I still owe you guys some pictures.

heh.. still no responses?

TomP, where are you?!

Anyway, here is the most current update.

I replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor, cleaned the intake/throttlebody pretty well, replaced the air filters, cleaned the ducts and hoses associated with that, and also replaced the oxygen sensor.

Took the car out for a test drive and man, I have never heard such a sweet purr coming from my car. I went around the block a few times and gave it some gas and the response was great as well. Came back home, killed the engine, attempted to start it and as soon as it started it died, then tried again and it would not start period.

What is next? I feel like I am throwing my money away.

Please offer me some advice.

Thanks

Hey you might want to take your production number out of your signature...

Anyway, have you tried to pull the codes? Maybe one got set. Try unplugging the MAF and driving around- make sure to tie the MAF harness outta the way so it doesn't get ripped by the fan belts. If the car runs like crap but doesn't stall (computer will use a "default" value for the MAF signal, aka 'limp home' mode) then there's something wrong with the MAF or the MAF wiring. Yes I know the MAF is new but you never know... was it brand new (outrageous $300) or a rebuilt? If rebuilt, was it a lifetime warranty?

The MAF shouldn't be affected by heat, though.... still sounds like an ignition module problem. I don't supposed if you noticed if the new module had grease applied between it and the new distributor, did ya?

I will test the MAF like you said today. Yea, it was a rebuilt one with a 3 month warranty.

As for the ignition module, can't say I know. Everything came on the new distributer already, and I did not know to check on that. The distributer has a lifetime warranty though, so I am not totally in the dark there.

I tested the MAF like you said by unplugging it. The car did not stall, chug, or anything out of the ordinary, it was like I never even took it off. Nothing I noticed changed.
