help w/ shifter

help w/ shifter

i don't know if this is normal on third gens or not, but if i try and unscrew my shift ****, the whole shaftv spins, is this normal? if not what is wrong and how much is it going to cost me?


i posted this in the transmissio forum last night and have recieved no feedback in 14 hours. so screw it. i am going to post it here where we care about more then debate over the best rear end.... i love th V6 forum, you guys rule, you have your high level conversations but still climb down hear to help the non mechanic little guy

manual..... but good point tom.

but this is not the first time i have recieved no respons in other threads. the only other section that seems to shower the newbie with help is the car audio. thos guys kick *** too

I have a T5 and mine doesn't move at all. Kinda scary to think that something like that could've broken off in the trans. I don't think it should move at all.

Well, I can't remember if the stick has a bend in it down below, but here's my suggestion: As long as it's shifting fine, you should be okay. I'm pretty sure you won't damage your tranny. If you still really want to take of the ****, go the long/safe way. Take the console out, or if you are really slick you can get the bolts off of the rubber boot without taking the console out. Then take the whole assembly off the tranny. Somewhere down below where the stick isn't visible, hold it with a pipe wrench and get someone to twist off the ****. Fix any marks you put in the stick, inspect it, then reinstall. Make sure you use some liquid gasket to seal the shifter assembly back on to the tranny.

why not just grab it under the boot...can't see there either, plus less hassle.

i used a rag with vice grips just below the ****, the damn rag wore the paint off!!! so i said f@@@ it. used the grips and the sucker came right off
